Africa-Press – Mauritius. Acting Prime Minister Paul Bérenger responded to the arrest of journalist Narain Jasodanand by the Central Crime Investigation Department (CCID) at the Central Police Station. He stated, “I have requested a full report from the Police Commissioner regarding this arrest to understand on what information the Cybercrime Unit acted. Was it necessary to deploy so many vehicles to apprehend a journalist?” This statement was made during the MBC 7:30 PM news bulletin on Saturday, September 13.
Bérenger also revealed that he was not informed of the arrest and plans to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam upon his return from the official visit to India. He expressed that the operations of the Cybercrime Unit have caused dissatisfaction among several ministers.
Furthermore, Paul Bérenger criticized changes made by the MSM to the Information and Communication Technologies Act and the Independent Broadcasting Authority Act, describing them as “repressive and unacceptable.” He affirmed that these issues will be part of the discussions held with the Prime Minister.
