Africa-Press – Mauritius. Between October 10 and 15, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Plaisance witnessed an exceptional series of drug seizures worth an estimated Rs 281 million. These successful operations were made possible through the joint efforts of the Mauritius Revenue Authority’s Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and the Airport Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU).

The first major interception took place on October 10. A 55-year-old Indian passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur on flight MK 647 was detected by MRA customs officers as he attempted to exit through the Green Channel. Upon inspection, his suitcase revealed a sophisticated double bottom concealing four plastic packets. The packets contained 4.32 kg of illicit drugs, with a street value estimated at Rs 64.8 million.

Two days later, on October 12, customs officers made another significant seizure. A British national was found carrying 26.69 kg of compressed plant material suspected to be cannabis. A detailed examination of his two checked bags led to the discovery of 31 parcels, each slightly slit and filled with the substance. The market value of the consignment was estimated to exceed Rs 32 million.

On October 15, CANS and ADSU conducted a third joint operation that led to one of the largest hauls of the period—over 37 kg of a substance believed to be hashish. Two British passengers, a man and a woman, were apprehended; the man carried nine packets, while the woman had ten. This seizure alone represented an estimated street value of Rs 185 million, marking the biggest confiscation of the week.

Within just five days, these coordinated actions successfully prevented drugs valued at approximately Rs 281 million from entering the Mauritian market. The collaborative vigilance of airport officers once again underscored Mauritius’s growing determination to combat the international narcotics trade through intelligence-driven operations and strengthened border control measures.
