Minister Mahomed Calls Urgent Meeting After Fatalities

Africa-Press – Mauritius. In response to the recent road fatalities, the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed Cassam Mahomed, convened an urgent meeting today in Port-Louis with the Chairperson of the National Road Safety Council, Mr Zeeshan Rajani, and other stakeholders.

The Minister said the meeting was called in response to the urgent need to address persistent reckless driving, which continues to claim lives despite recent legislative reforms. He noted that since the introduction of the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2025 on 12 December 2025, a downward trend in road accidents has been observed. However, he cautioned that this progress remains fragile and requires immediate, sustained action in light of the recent accidents.

Mr Mahomed expressed confidence that the implementation of the Penalty Points System (PPS), scheduled to be launched on Friday 30 January 2026 and enforced as from midnight on Saturday 31 January 2026, will serve as a strong deterrent against dangerous driving behaviour. PPS marks a decisive turning point in strengthening road discipline and significantly reducing fatalities, making it clear that non-compliance with road traffic laws will no longer be tolerated, he said.

The Minister further indicated that penalty points will be recorded through a dedicated mobile application, which is expected to be launched shortly. The application will provide the public with comprehensive information on the PPS and its enforcement.

Addressing the issue of drivers deemed unfit to be on the road, the Minister warned that stringent measures will be taken against offenders. He added that the Ministry, in collaboration with key stakeholders, is urgently reinforcing regulatory and enforcement mechanisms to ensure greater accountability.

As regard scrap vehicles, Mr Mahomed stated that the Ministry is actively working with the Solid Waste Management Division to address the matter, while acknowledging the impact on road safety. He instructed the relevant authorities to carry out systematic inspections of road infrastructure and ensure the prompt repair of potholes to reduce accident risks.

The Minister also called on the Mauritius Police Force to maintain strict and continuous enforcement of road traffic laws at all times, reaffirming that road safety remains an urgent national priority.
