Africa-Press – Mauritius. The United States and Mauritius will hold bilateral talks from February 23 to 25 in Port-Louis, focusing on security cooperation against the backdrop of the strategic significance of the Chagos Archipelago and the joint U. S. -U. K. military base on Diego Garcia.
Washington reaffirms its support for the agreement reached between the United Kingdom and Mauritius regarding the archipelago, as well as its commitment to ensuring the continued operation of military facilities in the Indian Ocean.
The discussions will be led by the U. S. Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, with participation from representatives of multiple U.
S. federal agencies. According to the official statement, these talks underscore “the enduring importance of the Chagos Archipelago and the joint U. S.
-U. K. base on Diego Garcia for U. S. national security.
” The agenda includes bilateral security cooperation and the implementation of frameworks governing the base’s operations, with the aim of securing its long-term functionality.
Furthermore, the U. S. government expresses support for the United Kingdom’s decision to advance its agreement with Mauritius concerning the Chagos Archipelago.
Washington also reaffirms its intention to finalize a bilateral arrangement with London to guarantee uninterrupted access to and use of installations and infrastructure within the archipelago.
As stated in the document, this commitment is designed to strengthen U. S. national security while simultaneously promoting stability and security across the Indian Ocean region.
