The Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Kumar Bachoo, met with Dr. Bruno Zipoli, an orthopedic specialist from France, to enhance Mauritius’ healthcare system. Dr. Zipoli’s visit includes sharing expertise on complex cases and performing surgeries, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving local medical services and training healthcare professionals.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, met with the Head of the Department of Orthopedics of Dax in France, Dr Bruno Zipoli, a specialist in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and upper limb as well as shoulder trauma surgery, today at the Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis.

Dr Zipoli who is also a member of the design group for the Total Evolutive Shoulder System (TESS) shoulder prosthesis, is on a professional visit to Mauritius from 23 February to 02 March 2026.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo highlighted that Dr Zipoli’s visit forms part of Government’s ongoing efforts to enhancing the healthcare system and ensure the provision of high-quality care to citizens. He underlined that during his stay, Dr Zipoli has shared his expertise in approximately 40 complex cases and is scheduled to perform around 10 surgical interventions.

He further emphasised that the regular engagement of foreign doctors and specialists to undertake complex procedures in Mauritius demonstrates Government’s firm commitment to saving lives and enhancing specialised medical services locally. He noted that local orthopaedic surgeons and para-medical staff have also benefited from hands-on training and knowledge transfer provided by the specialist.

Minister Bachoo also indicated that a formal request has been made for Dr Zipoli to return to Mauritius in October this year to continue providing his guidance and support in advanced surgical procedures.

For his part, Dr Zipoli commended the expertise, professionalism and dedication of local health practitioners. He stressed that such collaborative initiatives act as a catalyst in further strengthening their skills and contribute to the continuous improvement of orthopaedic care in Mauritius.

Dr Bruno Zipoli is a world renown in arthroscopic shoulder surgery with 30 years of experience and has performed over 10,000 arthroscopies of shoulder and upper limb with an average of 700 surgeries per year. He has published around 25 articles in international orthopaedic and arthroscopic journals. He is also a co-conceptor and inventor stemless shoulder arthroplasty TESS and also inventor of the Ancho suture known as ZIPKNOT.

Mauritius has been working to improve its healthcare system, particularly in specialized fields like orthopaedics. The collaboration with international experts, such as Dr. Bruno Zipoli, highlights the country’s efforts to provide high-quality medical care and training for local practitioners.
