Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Commemorative Plaque of La School (Royal College Port-Louis), an initiative of the Royal College Port-Louis Alumni Association, was affixed to the facade of the New Supreme Court Building, during a ceremony held this afternoon, in Port-Louis.
La School stood in this place as Royal College Port-Louis from 1929 to 1957 and in its own name until 1964. The Chief Justice, Mr. Asraf Ally Caunhye, former President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr.
Cassam Uteem and former Acting President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr. Paramasivum Vyapoory, other members of the RCPL Alumni Association as well as other eminent personalities were present on the occasion.
In his address on the occasion, the Director of Immedia Advertising and former student of the La School, Mr. Rama Poonoosamy, expressed gratitude to Mr. Asraf Ally Caunhye for his support in the concretisation of the initiative.
This commemorative plaque is of significant importance as it provides an opportunity to acknowledge history and to do something memorable for our country, he emphasised. La School, he said, was and still is history, with unforgettable pages of our young days, for those who studied and grew up here. Mr.
Rama Poonoosamy reminisced about his time spent at La School and observed that the secondary institution was a meeting place for the fusion of the budding intellect of students and the vast knowledge of educators. The school is the place where reign the freedom of the critical mind, self- discovery and the encounter of other people, he pointed out.
Furthermore, he underlined that La School was also the place where communalism, biases, selfishness and short-mindedness were shun away and instead principles of fair play, solidarity, Mauritianism, open-mindedness, and determination, ruled.
In a statement, former Rector of the RCPL, Mr. Henry Wan Wing Kai, stressed that he was a student of La School in the 1970s. He said that it is an honour and a matter of pride for having served his school as a Rector. We are today acting as the bridge between the previous and new generation, he stressed.
