Africa-Press – Mauritius. Senegal National Football Team continue to defend their AFCON triumph despite sanctions from Confederation of African Football. Ahead of the friendly against Peru National Football Team, coach Pape Thiaw made his position clear:
“We understand that in our country, trophies are won on the pitch, and that’s what we did. We are African champions.” His statement comes after the controversial decision to award a forfeit loss following Senegal’s walk-off in the final against Morocco National Football Team.
The Senegalese federation has already appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, hoping to overturn the ruling. While awaiting the decision, Thiaw chose to focus on the positive memories, stating: “The only thing I remember is the pleasure of bringing the trophy home.” He also reflected on the emotional impact of the victory across the country, reinforcing the belief that the title was earned on the field.
Midfielder Idrissa Gueye echoed his coach’s stance, declaring: “We didn’t steal it; we deserved to be African champions on the field.” As Senegal prepares for future challenges, including the FIFA World Cup 2026, the players remain united behind a clear message: their achievement cannot be taken away.
