Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Muslim Ladies Council (MLC) hosted a reception, today, at the City Council of Port Louis, to honour recipients of national awards 2026 and celebrate High School Certificate (HSC) laureates in Arabic, Urdu and Islamic Studies.
The national awardees comprise the Acting Prime Minister, Mr Shakeel Ahmed Yousuf Abdul Razack Mohamed, recipient of the Grand Commander of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (G.C.S.K.), on the occasion of National Day 2026, for distinguished contribution in the political and legal fields; and Mr Edun Enayat Hossen, Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (O.S.K.) for contribution in the cultural field; Ms Zeebah Boodhoo, executive member of the MLC, and HSC laureates in Arabic, Urdu and Islamic Studies.
The event gathered members of the National Assembly; the Lord Mayor, Mr Aslam Hossenally; the President of the MLC, Ms Mariam Goodur; and other distinguished guests.
In his address, the Acting Prime Minister highlighted the current global challenges and their impact on small island states such as Mauritius. He dwelt on the repercussions of the Middle East conflict on fuel and commodity prices, adding that despite these challenges, Mauritius has managed to maintain relatively lower fuel prices compared to several neighbouring countries including South Africa, Seychelles, Réunion Island and the Comoros. Rising costs related to fuel, freight, and insurance, he said, are among the consequences of ongoing international tensions and conflicts, which affect countries worldwide in different ways.
Mr Shakeel Mohamed also referred to measures being taken to ease the burden on citizens, while calling for solidarity and resilience, urging the population to unite in overcoming current economic challenges.
For her part, the President of the MLC, Mrs Mariam Goodur, underlined the importance of acknowledging both academic excellence and dedicated public service. She commended Mr Shakeel Mohamed for his contributions to the political and legal fields, as well as the legacy of service upheld by his family. She also praised the laureates for their hard work and perseverance, noting that their achievements serve as an inspiration to younger generations.
Mrs Goodur further paid tribute to individuals who have made significant contributions to the country’s development across various fields.
The Muslim Ladies Council has been instrumental in promoting education and community service in Mauritius. Founded to empower women and recognize achievements, the MLC plays a vital role in fostering cultural and academic excellence. The annual reception for national awardees and HSC laureates reflects the organization’s commitment to celebrating contributions to society and inspiring future generations. This event also highlights the challenges faced by small island nations, particularly in light of global economic pressures and conflicts that impact local communities.
