Africa-Press – Mauritius. A press conference was held, this afternoon, by the President of the Organising Committee of the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships, Mr Giandev Moteea, at the Citadelle Mall, in Port-Louis.

The President provided an overview of the preparations made so far in the context of the holding of the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius from 08 June to 12 June 2022 at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex.

He underlined that much progress has been made in the organisation of the event adding that the Organising Committee is working in close collaboration with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the event is a success.

He pointed out that sponsoring partners and participants are showing keen interest for the event, while informing that the first entries of participation have been received.

In addition, Mr Moteea emphasised that the organisation of the events will be strictly synchronised with COVID-19 sanitary protocols. A medical commission has also been appointed by the Organising Committee, he said.

He indicated that the members of the Management Committee have been nominated on the 22 October 2021. The budget allocated to the Commission is Rs 34 million, he informed.

As regards the accommodation of the 450 athletes, he said that they will be staying at the Ravenala Attitude Hotel. All athletes and members of the delegations will be accommodated in the same hotel, he added.

The President also recalled that the preliminary entries must be sent to the Organising Committee and to the Confederation of African Athletics before 07 February 2022, and the final entries are to be received on 02 May 2022 at latest.

Besides, he stated that a Technical Information Centre will be set up in the stadium to ensure a better liaison between each delegation, the technical secretariat, the Organising Committee, and the technical delegates.

The Call for tenders for the logo ended on 24 November 2021 and the final decision will be made on 10 December 2021, he said. As for the call for tenders for the creation of the video promoting the event, he highlighted that it will be open till 10 December 2021.

He said that the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships is a major event for Mauritius as it is called upon to represent an African country. It is also an honour and privilege for us to welcome the African athletes, he added.

Furthermore, he stressed that this event will increase the visibility of the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex as a sports centre of international standards. He recalled that the Sports Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment.

As for the Vice-President the Organising Committee, Mr Vivian Gungaram, who is also responsible for the technical organisation, he announced the eventual visit of the President of the Confederation of African Athletics, Mr Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, as well as the visit of a technical expert in regards to the ‘Meet Manager’ training, to be dispensed to nine local technical officers.

He further informed that the marking of the synthetic track at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex has been done and that it is the sole nine-lane track in the Indian Ocean region. There are 45 events on the programme, 22 for men and 22 for women and one mixed event, and a 10 Km trail race for both men and women.
