Prime Minister Jugnauth proceeds to ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of Verdun Bypass

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, proceeded to a ground-breaking ceremony, this afternoon, at Alma, in the context of the construction of the Verdun Bypass-Phase 1.

The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, and the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, were also present.

In a statement after the ceremony, Prime Minister Jugnauth highlighted that this project forms part of the Road Decongestion Programme whose objective is to alleviate traffic congestion along the main roads across the country.

This ceremony, he added, bears testimony of the ongoing infrastructural developmental projects including the Metro Express Project, that are being undertaken so as to provide better facilities and services to the citizens.

In addition, Mr Jugnauth underlined that this Bypass will provide an alternate route access to drivers coming from the region of Flacq/ Camp de Masque towards Reduit and Moka which will alleviate traffic congestion especially during peak hours, improve road connectivity, and enhance the travel experience of commuters.

Moreover, he pointed out that with upcoming development in that part of the country such as the Moka City, the Bypass will provide a rapid link connection in the region for the future adding that it will relieve nearly 70% of the drivers’ population who use the Alma Route regularly.

The Verdun Bypass Project
The project, to the tune of some Rs 320 million, will start from Moka – Camp De Masque Road – A7 after Alma village and will provide an alternative route up to Terre Rouge – Verdun – Trianon Link Road, M3 without the need to drive through the village of Verdun.

In the next phase, a new link will be constructed through an interchange across M3 to link St Pierre Bypass and A7 Road. The Verdun Bypass will be connected to M3 through access ramps and is likely to bring a traffic shift of around 70% from M3/A7.

The project will be of a duration of 18 months and is expected to be completed by March 2023. It also comprises the construction of an approximately 3.5km long new single carriageway with 1.5m shoulders on both sides.
