A South African attorney arrested and charged with embezzlement of more than R1.4 million in Mauritius may face similar criminal cases back at home.

The 47-year-old attorney, whose name is known to News24, was arrested in Mauritius earlier in July, where he is believed to be living. He appeared in the District Court of Port Louis on 15 July.

According to court documents seen by News24, the attorney was charged with embezzlement to the tune of more than R1.4 million, after he “unlawfully and fraudulently” took the money which had been transferred to him by another South African living in Mauritius for legal work, which wasn’t done.
