Africa-Press – Mauritius. As part of ongoing measures accompanying the introduction of the Penalty Points System, the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed, convened a working session, yesterday in Port Louis, with stakeholders and technical teams from his Ministry and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for further discussions on the creation of a dedicated motorcycle rally circuit in Mauritius.
Minister Mahomed explained that the initiative follows numerous requests from enthusiasts of the discipline. He recalled that the 2025–2026 Budget provides for the development of such a facility, reaffirming Government’s commitment to ensuring that motorcycle sports are carried out under safe, controlled, and regulated conditions. He further emphasised that the initiative will contribute significantly to curbing illegal street racing across the country.
He pointed out that illegal rallies and street racing offenders risk accumulating between 6 to 8 penalty points representing almost half of the total points under the Penalty Points System. The schedule of traffic offences and points allocation is nearly completed, he added.
In a bid to support the establishment of the rally circuit, Government will initiate a comprehensive feasibility study aimed at identifying the most suitable location, with particular attention to safety requirements and the expectations of motorsport practitioners. A consultancy firm will be appointed to undertake the study, which is expected to be completed within a 12-month timeframe.
In the meantime the committee has proposed the resurfacing of the existing track situated in the parking area of Anjalay Stadium in Belle Vue Harel, Pamplemousses. This temporary measure aims at ensuring that motorsport enthusiasts continue to have access to a safe and appropriate space for practice.
The proposed rally circuit will feature facilities for karting, motorcycle and bicycle racing. It may also be utilised by the Mauritius Police Force for training purposes, as well as serve as a site for driving examinations.
