Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Lizie dan la Main Association celebrated, today, its 40th anniversary in Curepipe, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun. The ceremony was organised by the Association in collaboration with the Muslim Ladies Council.<\/p>\n

The Director of Lizie dan la Main, Mr Reynolds Permal, the President of the Muslim Ladies Council, Mrs Mariam Goodur, and other personalities were also present on this occasion.<\/p>\n

In his address, President Roopun commended Mr Permal and all other stakeholders who have contributed to enable the Association to support those affected by visual impairments during the past 40 years.<\/p>\n

He recalled that, since the creation of the Lizie dan la Main Association back in 1982, the mentality of citizens has evolved and those with physical impairments can still have a bright future.<\/p>\n

Mr Roopun highlighted that Government, through the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, is constantly working towards providing a better environment and quality of life to citizens, in particular to those in need.<\/p>\n

He observed that in the past, only persons above 15 years who suffer from disabilities were entitled to the Basic Invalidity Pension. However, he recalled, Budget 2016-17 announced that this age discrimination was being removed, thus enabling children below 15 years of age and with disabilities to be entitled to this pension.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, President Roopun underlined that several measures were implemented by Government for the well-being of persons with disabilities. He also reckoned that, with the collaboration of Government, the civil society, Non-Governmental Organisations and international institutions, more facilities can be provided to those citizens with disabilities.<\/p>\n

For his part, Mr Permal dwelt on his personal experience and on how he decided to create the Lizie dan la Main Association so as to help other citizens who were in the same difficult situation as him.<\/p>\n

He provided details about the mission and vision of the Association, before expressing the wish that, through Braille, visually handicapped people can better develop their other senses.<\/p>\n

As for Mrs Goodur, she recalled that members of the Muslim Ladies Council are constantly working with public and private sectors institutions, as well as with Members of the Diplomatic Corps, so as to support needy citizens around the island.<\/p>\n

Lizie dan la Main Association Lizie Dan La Main offers its services to all visually impaired persons in the Indian Ocean. The Association has come a long way in forty years, but is still strongly committed to keep moving forward in its fight for the welfare of the visually impaired.<\/p>\n
