Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>A giant of the Mauritian cultural scene has left us. Meera Mohun, a household name in our country, was a precocious talent. At 8, she sang bhajans and kirtans at \u2018satsangs\u2019.<\/p>\n

A year shy of 16, she participated in a competition organised by the national broadcasting corporation. Participation in shows during the 1970s would increase her popularity greatly. During a career that spanned almost half a century, Meera Mohun showcased her singing talents at regional and international levels.<\/p>\n

In 1995, she was the first Mauritian artist to be part of the \u2018Traditional Odyssey\u2019; in 1998 she participated in the prestigious Angoul\u00eame festival, and in 2005 she conquered a younger audience with her duo with Dominique Barret and their hit \u201cMon Coeur Epris\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meera was the President of Mauritian Society of Authors between 2012 and 2014. In 1976, she joined Nalanda bookshop where she worked for three decades.<\/p>\n

This passion for reading is ultimately what led to the launch of her bookstore \u2018Book World\u2019 in 2007. Meera Mohun also took a special interest in spirituality and was a voracious reader.<\/p>\n

Works by Paramhansa Yogananda, namely \u2018Autobiography of a yogi\u2019, \u2018Man\u2019s Eternal Quest\u2019, \u2018Journey to Self-realisation\u2019 and \u2018Destiny of soul\u2019 were among her favourites.<\/p>\n

Meera\u2019s music was about love and respect. She practised what she preached and was involved in community projects among which one that encouraged reading in Mont Roches. Meera Mohun was born in Tranquebar in 1957 and passed away on the 16th of March 2022. Our deepest condolences to her close ones.<\/p>\n
