Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, launched, this afternoon, in Domaine Kamelia in Chemin Grenier, the National Transport Corporation (NTC) 16-seater van service.<\/p>\n

Two 16-seater vans would be deployed on the route Chamouny \u2013 Port Louis and one would be transporting passengers within the villages of Chamouny, Baie du Cap, Rivi\u00e8re des Galets, and Chemin Grenier.<\/p>\n

The Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mr Nand Prakash Ramchurrun; the Member of Parliament, Mrs Marie Sandra Monia Mayotte; and other personalities also attended the launching ceremony.<\/p>\n

In his address, Minister Ganoo stressed the imperative of having an efficient transport system to support the economic growth of a country. In that context, the NTC had procured some 15 vans equipped with GPS so as to minimise cost and maximise efficiency, he said. Furthermore, he reiterated Government\u2019s commitment to provide to commuters modern, comfortable and ecological transport services.<\/p>\n

Recalling that the NTC is the largest bus operator in Mauritius with a fleet of 540 buses, he stated that the Corporation was faced with several issues, namely the impact of the COVID-19 with a 15% reduction in the number of passengers and the necessity to replace some 200 buses.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, he underlined that 25 new buses would be procured from funds obtained in the last Budget for the renewal of the bus fleet of the Corporation.<\/p>\n

The Minister talked moreover of the strategies of the NTC to improve its service, acquire electric buses, and recruit employees. He also dwelt on the Integrated Transport System which includes the Metro Express Project. According to Mr Ganoo, the Metro line between Port and Curepipe would be completed by November 2022.<\/p>\n
