Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Representatives of Consumer Associations met the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, this afternoon, in Port Louis, in the context of the pre-budget consultations to bring forth proposals for the protection of consumers.<\/p>\n

In a statement after the meeting, the Secretary General of the Association des Consommateurs de l\u2019Ile Maurice, Mr. Jayen Chellum, highlighted the proposals made at the consultative meeting which include:<\/p>\n

the setting up of a Committee with the Public and Private sector and trade unions of Consumer Associations to address the alarming situation due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Ukraine and Russia war impacting on the global economy;<\/p>\n

the introduction of a price control for more products especially those targeting people at the lower rung of the social ladder; and tax removal on certain products.<\/p>\n

The introduction of a Tax band of 5% for salary not exceeding Rs 45 000 and the extension of the Tax band of 10% were also among the proposals made at the meeting, indicated the President of the Mauritius Tax Payer\u2019s Association, Mr J. C Allen Sandrazie<\/p>\n
