Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span><\/a>The outcome of the US election won\u2019t change the face of the continent, but nevertheless, Africa does care about the fate of the capricious Donald Trump, even if it shows a certain ambivalence.<\/p>\n

During a presidential campaign rally on 16 October, Donald Trump said that losing to the \u201cworst candidate in history\u201d would embarrass him so much that he would perhaps have to leave the United States.<\/p>\n

Would African countries be tempted to welcome the ousted president? Probably not the \u201cshithole countries\u201d that the outgoing president expressed disdain towards back in January 2018. Although\u2026<\/p>\n

Africans haven\u2019t been systematic or unanimous in their condemnation of Trump\u2019s insults.<\/p>\n

The same can be said of his frank, macho way of speaking \u2013 mannerisms that quite a few African citizens tolerate from their own leaders \u2013 as well as the substance of Trumpian thought which, like his slight against \u201cshithole countries\u201d, has pleased the most tormented objectors of the continent\u2019s poorly governed regimes.<\/p>\n

As one might expect, African heads of state offered their official congratulations to Joe Biden, mentioning \u201chis vast experience\u201d (Nigeria\u2019s Muhammadu Buhari), the promise of \u201cunity, security and prosperity\u201d (Ghana\u2019s Nana Akufo-Addo) and the prospect of a \u201ctrade agreement granting African countries duty-free access to US markets\u201d (Uganda\u2019s Yoweri Museveni).<\/p>\n

The most satirical internet users alluded to the grumpy \u201cOmar Trump Bongo, clinging to power like a true African dictator\u201d and whose stubbornness could be grounds for \u201cthe intervention of a peacekeeping force led by land-locked Chad\u2019s navy\u201d.<\/p>\n

While intellectuals such as Alain Mabanckou are delighted to see the end of an administration which \u201cput the United States in a ridiculous light these last four years\u201d, the nonconformist fringe of the continent\u2019s amateur political commentators will only grant Biden a temporary state of grace.<\/p>\n

As for Kamala Harris\u2019s popularity in Africa, America\u2019s first female vice president \u2013 an African-American whose parents are Jamaican and Indian \u2013 gives me the opportunity to unearth one of her sparring matches with Biden during the primaries, which Africans didn\u2019t fail to notice.<\/p>\n

During a televised debate, the new president\u2019s running mate, who at the time was one of his rivals, accused the white seventy-something of having been on friendly terms with two pro-segregation senators and opposed in the 1970s to bussing, a practice that sought to promote racial mixing by transporting black students to majority-white schools.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s no matter. Her comments during the primaries are already as anachronistic as Biden\u2019s from the 1970s, as he is known today as \u201cJoe\u201d, a blundering \u201cgood guy\u201d who has become a martyr for life and previously served as vice president under the United States\u2019 first African-American president, Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

As for Trump, will he instantly be forgotten in a wave of African indifference or will the continent continue to scrutinise the tweets the billionaire posts while lying comfortably in his bed scattered with cheeseburger crumbs?<\/p>\n
