{"id":14451,"date":"2022-05-05T08:51:08","date_gmt":"2022-05-05T08:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\/all-news\/mediocre-south-africa-outflanked-again-by-mauritius-rwanda-in-global-good-government-index"},"modified":"2022-05-05T10:29:29","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T10:29:29","slug":"mediocre-south-africa-outflanked-again-by-mauritius-rwanda-in-global-good-government-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\/all-news\/mediocre-south-africa-outflanked-again-by-mauritius-rwanda-in-global-good-government-index","title":{"rendered":"Mediocre South Africa outflanked again by Mauritius, Rwanda in Global Good Government Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>A fifth position in Africa puts South Africa ahead of most African countries in the <a href=\"https:\/\/chandlergovernmentindex.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/\">Chandler Good Governance Index<\/a>, but what has become a theme in most of the global indices and reports is the rise of Mauritius and Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;biznews.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/wealth-building\/2022\/04\/26\/sa-private-wealth-drop-mauritius\">Henley and Partners report<\/a>, Mauritius was singled out as the country where private wealth has increased way above other African countries over the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>In the Chandler Index, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;biznews.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/wealth-advisors\/2021\/10\/26\/rise-mauritius-continues\">Mauritius is again<\/a> in the top African position, with Rwanda second and Botswana in third place.<\/p>\n<p>When you dig into the lengthy report on what leads to good governance, it is clear what South Africa lacks and what it is good at. We are in the 100th place out of 104 countries in terms of having an attractive marketplace, which does not auger well for luring investors to the country.<\/p>\n<p>That is just four places above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;biznews.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/thought-leaders\/2021\/02\/18\/socialism-sa-zim-venezuela\">Venezuela<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And despite all the programmes to uplift the people of South Africa, the country still ranks only 96 on the list when it comes to helping people rise.<\/p>\n<p>It is ironic as the words of Nelson Mandela are quoted in the introduction of the index: \u201cA nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d For leadership and foresight, South Africa is in the middle at 57, while financial stewardship is at 56 and, the country sits at 52 for global influence and reputation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;biznews.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/premium\/2022\/03\/08\/ramaphosa-un-vote-explanation\">Recent fence-sitting on Ukraine<\/a> and voting at the United Nations has probably not helped that ranking.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to strong institutions, South Africa finds itself in the upper half at number 42, but the criteria where we rank among the top 25 in the world, is for robust laws and policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Linda van Tilburg The second edition of the Chandler Good Government Index (the \u201cCGGI\u201d, or the \u201cIndex\u201d) launched today in Singapore. Designed by the Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG), the Index is the world\u2019s most comprehensive index of effective national government.<\/p>\n<p>It shows the importance of investing in enhancing the capabilities of public servants and the structures they operate within, to achieve a better and more sustainable future.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s edition builds on the success of the inaugural Index launched in 2021 and comes at a critical time as governments around the world look to recover from the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Based on over 50 open data sources, the CGGI is a principled and data-driven way to understand the capabilities and outcomes of 104 governments across the world, and almost 90% of the world\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p>The index focuses on seven pillars \u2013 Leadership &amp; Foresight; Robust Laws &amp; Policies; Strong Institutions; Financial Stewardship; Attractive Marketplace; Global Influence &amp; Reputation; and Helping People Rise.<\/p>\n<p>The rigorous methodology of the Index was developed in consultation with government practitioners, leaders, index experts, and researchers in governance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\">Mauritius<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Mauritius.
