Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Stockholm +50 National Consultation, an initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), kickstarted this morning, at the Caudan Arts Centre in Port Louis.<\/p>\n

The National Consultation is being held in the context of the forthcoming Stockholm +50 international meeting entitled \u2018A healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity\u2019, to be held in Sweden on 2nd and 3rd June 2022.<\/p>\n

It is recalled that to commemorate the 50 years since the organisation of the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972, the United Nations General Assembly has agreed through two Resolutions to convene this international meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, during the week of World Environment Day. The Government of Sweden will host this international meeting with the support of the Government of Kenya.<\/p>\n

Present during the opening ceremony of the National Consultation, the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano, stated, in his address, that the aim of the national consultation was to stimulate an inclusive dialogue between Government and the society on the main themes to be addressed at the Stockholm+50.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that discussions and recommendations, emanating from the National Consultations of all Member States, would be used to prepare a global synthesis report that would chart the way forward for governments and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether, we will have to act quickly to reverse the situation and save the planet for our survival and for our children,\u201d stressed Minister Ramano.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Minister observed that an unhealthy planet threatened human health, prosperity, equality and peace as well as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

He underlined that Stockholm+50 would therefore be an international, collaborative and interactive meeting with the participation of Heads of state, donors, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), activists and other stakeholders, who would be invited to share their experiences and initiatives to protect the planet and contribute to sustainable and inclusive development, including a sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order for Mauritius to properly present its priority challenges, its commitments and promises of action, which will contribute to foster a healthy society and a sustainable recovery, my Ministry is collaborating with the UNDP to draw up a national document which will thus transmit our challenges, our aspirations, our ideas, our perspectives and our solutions,\u201d indicated Mr.<\/p>\n

Ramano. Also present on the occasion, the UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms Amanda Serumaga, underlined that the initiative sought to gather stakeholders\u2019 views on the drafting of the Status Report regarding the strives made by Mauritius in combating climate change.<\/p>\n

She expressed her appreciation to the Minister for his unequivocal support and collaboration, for the holding of the event as well as the implementation of other key projects.<\/p>\n

She emphasised that humankind had a choice to move towards a better future and, according to her, solidarity and collective actions were critical for its success.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recommendations and messages that will emerge from the Stockholm +50 are an opportunity to mark a historic milestone on this journey,\u201d she highlighted.<\/p>\n
