Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change invites all stakeholders of the private sector to be aware of the extent of the waste problem in Mauritius, in terms of amount generated, and encourages them to work in collaboration with Government in a bid to decrease waste generation around the island.
\nThe Senior Adviser at the Ministry Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Prakash Kowlesser, made this statement, today, during the official launching ceremony of the Palletless system organised by Kolos Cement Ltd in Mer Rouge.<\/p>\n

The Palletless system, introduced for the first time in the Indian Ocean region, is an innovative packaging method that significantly reduces the use of wooden pallets.<\/p>\n

The Director General of Kolos Cement Ltd, Mr Dominique Billon, and other personalities were present at the event. Mr Kowlesser commended Kolos Cement Ltd for this laudable initiative which fitted within the concept of circular economy.<\/p>\n

He reminded that Government\u2019s vision was to promote recycling and to determine, in the value chain, how to decrease waste generation. Mr Kowlesser further observed that the Ministry would organise a circular economy event from 25 to 27 May 2022, whereby discussions would focus, among others, on the construction sector.<\/p>\n

As for Mr Billon, he highlighted that the Palletless system, for which some Rs 10 million was disbursed, had been developed by the international company, FLSmitdh, and was being implemented for the very first time in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n

He stressed that this innovative packaging method eliminated the use of wooden pallets, resulting in more efficient, safer and less burdensome bagging and delivery processes for the personnel. Mr Billion nonetheless conceded that this innovative system implied that the cement pockets were packaged exclusively in plastic.<\/p>\n

\u201cHence, this innovation is being implemented in a responsible way as it is coupled with a large-scale campaign with our stakeholders and all the actors in the supply chain so that this plastic be returned and recycled into piping isorange by our recycling partner DKD Plastic Pipes\u201d, he stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce recycled, the product will be used in the construction sector itself,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Before concluding, Mr Billon remarked that a forum on the theme \u2018Construction and sustainable development \u2013 Moving from commitment to action\u2019 would be organised on 23 June 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis half-day forum,\u201d he underscored, \u201cwill provide a platform so as to reflect on the integration principles of the circular economy in the construction sector.\u201d<\/p>\n
