Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>A memorial lecture highlighting the life achievements of late Sir Anerood Jugnauth, also known as SAJ, was held, this afternoon, at the University of Mauritius (UOM), in Reduit. A photo exhibition showcasing memorable events the institution shared with late SAJ was also displayed.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth; the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun; and other dignitaries graced the event.<\/p>\n

Sir Anerood Jugnauth, GCSK, KCMG, QC, former President and Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, passed away on 3 June 2021 at the age of 91. Born on 29 March 1930, SAJ became one of the most remarkable and respected politicians of the country by serving Mauritius, twice as President of the Republic, and six times as Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

In his opening remarks, the Chancellor of the UOM, Dr Jean Claude Autrey, dwelt on the significant contribution of SAJ to the country\u2019s development and progress.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that when SAJ began his prime ministership in 1982, the country was on the brink of disaster and economic collapse; but with his authority, tenacity and dedication, he brought it back on track.<\/p>\n

Dr Jean Claude Autrey stressed that SAJ left his imprint on the country, and was deemed the \u2018Father\u2019 of the economic development of Mauritius. He described SAJ as a man of decision, devoted to his family and the embodiment of integrity.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Chancellor recalled that SAJ was a great believer and supporter of education, and throughout his mandates, he supported the UOM in accompanying the country in its fast development.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a visionary, nation builder and a true patriot, SAJ arouses inspiration in us and especially the younger generation,\u201d he affirmed.
\nHe further hailed SAJ as a fighter who led many struggles, including for the complete decolonisation of the country, for women\u2019s rights and the war on drugs. According to Dr Autrey, SAJ was the most illustrious son of the Republic, and his impressive track record should be taught to students and children.<\/p>\n
