Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The three best projects of Mauritius submitted to the AfriCAN Code Challenge 2021, were awarded cash prizes, shields and certificates. They will receive each a laptop and a medal sponsored by SAP Africa Code Week.
\nThe project entitled \u2018The Super Recyclers\u2019 by Devansh and Darshika Hemraj, won the first prize and was declared as the Winner of African Code Challenge 2021 African wide.
\nThe President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, remitted prizes to the winners, on Saturday 11 June 2022 during a ceremony held at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Center, in Port-Louis.
\nIn his address, the President underlined that it is a matter of pride to have Mauritian participants being proclaimed as the winners of the competition and underlined that the innovativeness and creativity showcased by the three participating teams were impressive.
\nYou have set the example and I hope that your outstanding achievement will encourage more students to follow your path, he said. Mr. Roopun hailed the active engagement of the Science Center in creating awareness for science and technology while encouraging creativity and innovation particularly among young people and supplementing education in science and technology at all levels.<\/p>\n

On that score, he urged the Center to keep motivating our students into STEM subjects through simple yet innovative approaches. Furthermore, the President observed that nowadays there is a pressing demand to initiate students to the more technical aspects of computing, such as designing software, rather than on computer science, which relates to using software.
\nCoding, he stressed, helps youngsters develop various abilities-like problem solving skills, critical thinking and creativity. It helps you build resilience, improve their mathematics and writing skills but also gives them valuable skills in life and eventually in the workforce, he added.
\nIn addition, President Roopun dwelt on efforts that are being made by Government, through the National Computer Board to pioneer several coding awareness campaigns and trainings at national level.
\nThe NCB, he pointed out, has also introduced the Children Innovative Learning & Design which is a new ICT Educational initiative that introduces Robotics and coding to school learners at primary level, with as at date more than 5,000 children have benefitted from this programme.
\nHe also spoke about other initiatives including: The Digital Maker Programme (DMP) project of the NCB which has as objective to boost the creative skills of the young learners around the basics of coding and the use of sensors and ICT Boot Camps being organised for female students of State Colleges of Grade 10 \u2013 12.
