Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Some 30 planters engaged in flower production received, this afternoon, their certificates for having successfully completed training for the production of chrysanthemum blooms, at the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI) Farmer Training School, Wooton.
\nThe training, an initiative of the FAREI, was conducted by Mr Rinus de Vreede who is a private chrysanthemum consultant with 25 years\u2019 experience as a grower in Holland.
\nIn a statement, the President of Flower Growers Association Mauritius, Mr Vinod Beeharree, underlined that the country imports around Rs 100 million of chrysanthemum annually which he said is a significant amout in terms of imports.
\nThe four-day training, he highlighted, was conducted with the objective to encourage existing growers to increase their cultivation and to urge more potential growers to launch themselves in this field.
\nHe indicated that this initiative is in line with Government\u2019s vision to reduce reliance on imports and to optimise the potential of local growers. For his part, Mr Rinus de Vreede indicated that Mauritius has an ideal climate for the development of its floriculture industry.
\nHe spoke of the new and modern techniques in the production of chrysanthemum adding that there is huge potential for Mauritius to become an important flower producer for both local and export markets.
\nMr Rinus de Vreede is a flower specialist and has more than 25 years\u2019 experience as a private chrysanthemum consultant. He works for PUM, an organisation which promotes training in chrysanthemum production in developing countries such as Vietnam, Pakistan, Myanmar, Uganda, Georgia and Turkey. He has also trained growers in Russia, Moldova, Malaysia, Colombia, and China.<\/p>\n
