Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>A graduation ceremony for some 80 students of the Fashion and Design Institute (FDI), for having successfully completed their studies in the fields of Art and Design, Graphic Design, Media Practice and Jewellery Manufacturing and Design, was held this morning at the C\u00f4te d’Or National Sports Complex.
\nThe Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah, the Chairperson of the FDI, Mr Sunael Singh Purgus, and other personalities were present.
\nIn his address, Minister Bholah lauded the graduates for their hard work and sacrifices during their studies while encouraging them to keep the same spirit as they will be stepping on a new journey in their professional life.
\nFashion, design and creativity, the Minister said are high on Government\u2019s agenda. He underlined that the Industrial Policy and Strategic Plan 2020-2025 for Mauritius, emphasises the need for product upgrading through improvement in the quality, aesthetics design and functionality.<\/p>\n

The manufacturing sector, he added, has over the years provided gainful employment to Mauritians and is now revamping itself by focusing on new strategies through the adoption of emerging technologies.<\/p>\n

Minister Bholah further highlighted that the FDI is playing a preponderant role in serving the manufacturing sector with a pool of highly qualified workforce.<\/p>\n

This, according to him, will bring the sector to the next desired level of development. He commended the substantial work being carried out by the FDI, adding that it has provided training to some 2000 students since its creation in 2009.<\/p>\n

On the international scene, the FDI organised its first successful fashion show at the Dubai Expo 2020 and won the prize of best stylist in the Salon International du Textile Africain, held in Djibouti in 2021, indicated the Minister.<\/p>\n

He therefore dwelt on the need for these enablers that have become vital amid the COVID-19 pandemic for the continued development of the manufacturing sector.
\nThe FDI remains at the forefront by providing quality education and training and is fully assuming its mandate of promoting excellence in the field of creative and design education by positioning Mauritius as a competitive producer of fashionable products, he said.
\nThe Fashion and Design Institute operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives (Industrial Division). It aims at promoting excellence in the field of design education.
\nOfficially launched in September 2009, the FDI provides courses ranging from Certificate, Diploma to Degree levels in the fields of art and design, fashion design, graphic design, interior design, Jewellery Manufacturing that are of interest to our society especially in the creative side thus contributing to the development of the creative industry in Mauritius.<\/p>\n
