fragility of terrestrial-marine ecosystems.<br \/>\nThe island\u2019s lagoons are biodiversity hotspots that have been under intense pressure for centuries; since the beginning of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;amazon.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/Lost-Land-Dodo-Ecological-Mauritius\/dp\/0300141866\">sugar cane industry<\/a> in the 1600s, to more recent <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/10.1017\/S0376892914000411\">urban development<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/10.1016\/S0269-7491(03)00125-8\">tourism-linked<\/a> impacts and climate-induced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;forbes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/sites\/nishandegnarain\/2020\/08\/09\/how-satellites-traced-the-fateful-journey-of-the-ship-that-led-to--mauritius-worst-oil-spill-disaster\/#4a0e13615b42\">aground<\/a> on 25 July to the southeast of the island.<br \/>\nWhile the oil spill is relatively small compared to other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bbc.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/world-europe-52977740\">similar incidents<\/a> around the world, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bbc.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/world-africa-53754751\">significant<\/a> due to its proximity to sensitive areas.<br \/>\nThe ecological ramifications of 1,000 tonnes of petroleum products emptying into the southeast lagoon waters is potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;forbes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/sites\/nishandegnarain\/2020\/08\/21\/un-satellites-reveal-30-kilometers-of-mauritius-shoreline-heavily-affected-by-wakashio-oil-spill\/?fbclid=IwAR1dAYhZmgDjzODfFf4bZWso3lCHjlfPdGt4gfZ9UHSzLSNVe_-h99ToQoY#4089ea0e2a1d\">devastating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The affected area contains two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;ramsar.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/wetland\/mauritius\">UNESCO<\/a> Wetlands of International Importance, two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;reefconservation.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;mu\/projects\/community-outreach-and-conservation\/marine-protected-areas-mpas\/\">Marine Protected Areas<\/a> (MPAs) and one nature reserve.<br \/>\nThese sites\u2019 rare and endemic marine and terrestrial species are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;forbes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/sites\/nishandegnarain\/2020\/08\/12\/15-rare-species-in-danger-from-the-wakashio-oil-disaster-in-mauritius\/#36f4f70c45d5\">threatened<\/a>.<br \/>\nLong-term conservation efforts \u2013 led by the government and NGOs such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;mauritian-wildlife.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/\">Mauritian Wildlife Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ecosud.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;mu\/\">Eco Sud<\/a> \u2013 face the very real danger of having decades of hard work <a spills in marine environments are extremely complex and lengthy to <a on how the MV Wakashio spill will affect Mauritius\u2019 unique, tropical environment.<br \/>\nNonetheless, the impacts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;sandiegouniontribune.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/opinion\/the-conversation\/sd-oil-drilling-in-california-coast-and-the-biggest-oil-spills-20180104-htmlstory.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;html\">oil spills<\/a> off other temperate coastlines in the past suggests there will be a significant loss of biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>The shallow 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/10.1016\/j.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;marenvres.2020.104916\">shipwreck<\/a> on the reefs of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;wikipedia.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/wiki\/St.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;_Brandon\">St Brandon archipelago<\/a> (located about 430 km from Mauritius) led corals to turn black and eventually perish in 2014 \u2013 an event that also reminds us the impacts on coral atolls should be considered in years, not just months.<\/p>\n<p>The affected lagoons are complex ecological systems that <a href=\"http:\/\/chm.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;govmu.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/status-and-threats\/freshwater-coastal-and-marine-biodiversity\/#1478839773335-ef19edaa-9c8b\">interconnect<\/a> terrestrial and marine environments.<br \/>\nThey are home to critical ecosystems including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;researchgate.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;net\/publication\/306396219_Spatial_Distribution_of_Rhizophora_Mucronata_and_Bruguiera_Gymnorrhiza_Mangroves_Using_Kriging_Technique_A_Contribution_to_Understanding_Forest_Structure_in_South-East_Coast_of_Mauritius_Indian_Ocean\">mangroves<\/a>, seagrass meadows and fringing coral reefs.<br \/>\nThese environments work in unison; mangrove wetlands provide a natural buffer to control surface water runoff to the lagoon and a habitat for juvenile fish and invertebrates.<\/p>\n<p>The short-term effects of the oil spill are already evident. A green heron has been found oiled and a critically endangered hawksbill turtle found dead.<\/p>\n<p>Larger marine species such as melon-headed whales and other dolphin species have also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;theguardian.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/world\/2020\/aug\/28\/at-least-40-dolphins-die-area-hit-mauritius-oil-spill\">recently died<\/a> along the affected shores; the cause of their deaths is still under investigation. The delicate balances of these ecosystems could be further disrupted.<br \/>\nThere are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;youtube.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/watch?v=wkRESq6-Ihs&amp;feature=youtu.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;be&amp;fbclid=IwAR0dL_sP6TX2hSnVbFXbioqBsNwBlD26O-Crqvj8X6AXBHxW8Wdp6cdl2G8\">fears<\/a> that the oil may have infiltrated into the ecosystem of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;mauritian-wildlife.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/Ileauxaigrettes\">Ile aux Aigrettes<\/a>.<br \/>\nThese toxic chemicals can potentially accumulate in the unique coral island\u2019s native plants and poison endemic invertebrates, birds and reptiles feeding on those plants.<\/p>\n<p>The petroleum can also cause genetic mutations in reptiles. It will take years to fully understand the impacts of the infiltration of oil into freshwater systems and the introduction of toxic sludge into mangrove forests.<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;protectedplanet.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;net\/blue-bay-marine-park-ramsar-site-wetland-of-international-importance\">Blue Bay Marine Park<\/a> is an environmentally protected marine heritage site.<br \/>\nIt is home to nearly 38 corals species, over 72 fish species, 4 seagrass species, and the endangered green turtle. In June 2020, this marine park was teaming with fish and even sea turtle sightings \u2013 a testament to long-term conservation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Following the shipwreck in July, there will be long-term consequences as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;forbes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/sites\/nishandegnarain\/2020\/08\/14\/toxic-in-the-tropics-the-invisible-killer-now-in-mauritian-waters\/?fbclid=IwAR0lEwzFhryXt5HyiUDJjgNcUsvTxkHH_K--PXU2FC3LZEpNzcmpcM_2gAc#5fee4395252d\">toxic pollutants<\/a> circulate.<\/p>\n<p>Arsenic levels <a href=\"http:\/\/mauritiusassembly.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;govmu.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/English\/hansard\/Documents\/2020\/hansard302020.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;pdf\">reported<\/a> in fish and squid samples collected from the south eastern lagoons are already elevated to 5-7 times higher than the maximum permissible limit for human consumption.<br \/>\nThere are also fears of petroleum particles <a href=\"https:\/\/response.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;restoration.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;noaa.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;gov\/sites\/default\/files\/Oil_Spill_Coral.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;pdf\">depositing<\/a> onto corals that have been slowly regenerating over the last 20 years, since the ban on sand mining.<br \/>\nMauritius\u2019 turquoise waters have been a draw for international tourists, but they also form an important part of the economic and social fabric of local communities. Locals fondly refer to this lagoon as mama la mer (mother sea).<\/p>\n<p>Many families residing in some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;iom.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;int\/news\/iom-and-un-partners-respond-mauritius-oil-spill\">13 coastal villages<\/a> in the vicinity of the oil spill glean their livelihood from the lagoon whether, from artisanal fishing and\/or being employed in the tourism industry.<\/p>\n<p>The World Wildlife Fund (WWF)\u2019s Madagascar director has <a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;panda.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;org\/wwf_news\/?499951\/WWF-Statement-on-the-recent-oil-spill-off-the-coast-of-Mauritius\">warned<\/a> that the impact of the oil spill on 2,300 small-scale fishermen and women in Mauritius will be overwhelming.<br \/>\nThe livelihoods of other vulnerable communities living along the coast are also under threat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;rfi.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;fr\/en\/africa\/20200811-mauritius-prepares-for-the-worst-as-vessel-at-centre-of-oil-spill-disintegrates\">According<\/a> to the CEO of Beau Vallon Group, which owns Preskil Island Resort, thousands of jobs are at a high risk of being lost.<br \/>\nThe closure of international borders due to COVID-19 had already threatened many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;lexpress.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;mu\/article\/381647\/commercants-planteurs-eleveurs-en-galere\">small businesses<\/a> that are dependent on tourism.<br \/>\nNow, the likes of glass bottom boat operators in the Blue Bay Marine Park face the additional challenges posed by the oil spill a few kilometres away from them.<\/p>\n<p>From the impressive scale at which communities are <a href=\"https:\/\/mg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;co.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;za\/africa\/2020-08-12-mauritius-weeps-as-the-island-is-surrounded-by-oil\/\">mobilising<\/a>, it is clear that Mauritians recognise the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;bbc.&lt;br&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;com\/news\/world-africa-53959889\">impact<\/a> the spill could have on the environment and livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>The long-term impacts on fragile ecosystems, however, will take years to fully comprehend.
