Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>In the context of the 10 years’ anniversary of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) State Action Plan (SAP) initiative, ICAO launched a youth contest in May 2021 to Africa-Indian Ocean Member States, inviting students from various educational institutions to participate in its 10th Anniversary Regional Contest.
\nMauritius had an outstanding performance in this competition by winning 10 Awards. As such, an award ceremony was organised, today in Plaine Magnien, by the Department of Civil Aviation to reward those Mauritian students who have excelled in three categories of this competition.
\nThe categories are as follows: students aged 12 to 15 years old (Essay); students aged 12 to 15 years old (Team); and students aged 16 to 20 years old (Design). The Director of the DCA, Mr Ishwarduth Pokhun, and other personalities were present at the event.
\nIn his address, Mr Pokhun highlighted that participants are being awarded certificates, in addition to other prizes from Air Mauritius and Airport of Mauritius Ltd (AML) Corail Helicopters.<\/p>\n

He recalled that Mauritius came up with its first action plan in 2014, in line with ICAO\u2019s SAP initiative, and added that the Mauritian SAP is currently being reviewed and is in the process of being finalised.<\/p>\n

Mr Pokhun underlined that the contest challenged students to apply green innovative solutions on real-life environmental problems at aviation installations, such as airports. The aim of this contest, he observed, was to inspire as well as tap into students\u2019 ability to develop creative problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n

Moreover, he underscored that in addition to improving interest in pursuing aviation-related qualifications, participating in the contest created an ability for the students to apply the knowledge of what they have learnt in solving real-life situations in the aviation and environment sectors.<\/p>\n

He further remarked that the ICAO official award ceremony was held virtually on 07 December 2021 where the winners were announced. On this occasion, the ICAO congratulated Mauritius and informed the DCA that most of the outstanding participants were from our country, he added.<\/p>\n

Mr Pokhun also seized this opportunity to give an overview of other initiatives of the ICAO aiming at reducing global emission of global emission of carbon dioxide. AML Corail Helicopters and Air Mauritius proposed to offer prizes to the winners and runners-up.<\/p>\n

Air Mauritius is offering six return air tickets to Rodrigues to the six winners and Corail Helicopters is offering 10 minutes flight in helicopter for the first runners-up.
\nAs for the second runners-up, they will beneficiate from a one-week internship at the airport, that is at AML, Air Mauritius, and the DCA. Winners and runners-up are as follows:
\nStudents aged 12 to 15 years old (Essay): Miss Priyamvada Jhulloo from Sir Leckraz Teeluck SSS (winner); Miss Eliana Gungah from Hamilton College (first runner-up); and Miss Tania Narraina-Reddy from Eden College Girls (second runner-up).
\nStudents aged 12 to 15 years old (Team): Miss Nirvashi Ramjeeawon, Miss Jemima Janvi Seeboruth, Miss Sephora Bellerose and Miss Trupty Jhangai from Universal College (winners).
\nStudents aged 16 to 20 years old (Design): Miss Eleanore Etienne-Larch\u00e9 from Notre Dame College (winner); Mr Navesh Ramsurrun from St Mary\u2019s College (first runner-up); and Miss Aliz\u00e9e Bernard from Notre Dame College (second runner-up).<\/p>\n
