Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>A wreath-laying ceremony, to kick-off activities in the context of the 100th edition of the International Day of Cooperatives, to be observed on 02 July, was held this morning at the Cooperative Monument in Les Jardins de la Compagnie, Port-Louis.<\/p>\n

The theme retained by the United Nations and the International Cooperative Alliance for the 2022 celebrations is \u201cCooperatives Build a Better World\u201d. The Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah, the Chairman of the Mauritius Cooperative Alliance Ltd, Mr Daramraj Kona Yerukunondu, and other personalities were present.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Minister Bholah underscored the significant role played by our ancestors in the Cooperative Movement. He also spoke about the sector\u2019s contribution in ensuring food security, providing employment, facilitating access to finance and promoting human values since many years.<\/p>\n

For his part, Mr Yerukunondu highlighted that the wreath-laying ceremony is a traditional gesture in recognition of former cooperators who have contributed in the significant growth of the Movement. Cooperative societies, he added, have now the responsibility to bring the Movement to greater heights.<\/p>\n

Activities being organised to mark the international day comprise: training on preparation of selected Rodriguan dishes by women cooperators from Rodrigues at the National Cooperative College (NCC) on 30 June and 01 July 2022; launch of a \u2018Gathering of Cooperators\u2019 at the NCC at Bois Marchand on 02 July 2022; radio talks on the cooperative movement in Mauritius and Rodrigues; and a Cooperative market fair at Quatre-Bornes on 04 July 2022.<\/p>\n
