{"id":18248,"date":"2022-07-17T09:06:20","date_gmt":"2022-07-17T09:06:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\/all-news\/government-has-not-and-shall-not-infringe-upon-fundamental-rights-of-citizens-states-prime-minister-jugnauth"},"modified":"2022-07-17T10:28:41","modified_gmt":"2022-07-17T10:28:41","slug":"government-has-not-and-shall-not-infringe-upon-fundamental-rights-of-citizens-states-prime-minister-jugnauth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\/all-news\/government-has-not-and-shall-not-infringe-upon-fundamental-rights-of-citizens-states-prime-minister-jugnauth","title":{"rendered":"Government has not and shall not infringe upon fundamental rights of citizens, states Prime Minister Jugnauth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>As Mauritius is a sovereign democratic state where the rule of law prevails, Government has not done, and shall not do, anything to infringe upon the fundamental rights of our citizens and act against our national security and our sovereignty.<br \/>\nThe Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement, today in the National Assembly, in reply to a Private Notice Question pertaining to the use of equipment to enable sniffing, interception, monitoring or recording of internet traffic to and from Mauritius and\/or countries in the region.<br \/>\nPrime Minister Jugnauth highlighted that neither himself nor any official of his Office has, acting on behalf of Government, had any discussion or agreement with any foreign party and\/or telecommunication operator in connection with the installation or use of equipment to enable sniffing, interception, monitoring or recording of internet traffic to and from Mauritius and\/or countries in the region.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that Mauritius sources content from the internet via its submarine cables network system. These include, according to him: LION\/LION2 \u2013 connecting Mauritius from the Terre Rouge Cable Landing Station to Mombassa and the rest of the world; SAFE\/SAT3 \u2013 connecting Mauritius from the Baie Jacotet Cable Landing Station to Penang towards the East and Melkbostran in South Africa to terminate in Portugal; and METISS \u2013 connecting Mauritius from Arsenal Landing Station to South Africa.<br \/>\nPrime Minister Jugnauth further informed that Baie Jacotet is a restricted area pursuant to Government Notice 183 of 2004 which is the Police (Restricted Area) (Baie Jacotet) Order 2004.<br \/>\nHe added that Government Notice 183 of 2004 is in force since 11 November 2004, and that this area is secured by the Special Mobile Force and manned by Mauritius Telecom staff.<br \/>\nIn regard to the other two Landing Stations at Terre Rouge and Arsenal, the Prime Minister informed that they are secured respectively by Mauritius Telecom and Emtel private security personnel.<br \/>\nMoreover, he emphasised that there has been at no point in time any installation or any attempt by his Office to install whatsoever equipment at any of these Landing Stations, to enable sniffing, interception, monitoring or recording of internet traffic to and from Mauritius.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\">Mauritius<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Mauritius.
