Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The High Commissioner of Australia to Mauritius, Dr Kate O\u2019Shaughnessy, hosted yesterday, a farewell reception at her residence in Flor\u00e9al. The event was attended by the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun; the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth; the Vice President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Eddy Boiss\u00e9zon, and other eminent personalities.
\nDr O\u2019Shaughnessy, who is a career officer with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, arrived in Mauritius in August 2020. She previously worked as the Deputy Director of the Western Australia State Office, after having served overseas, among others, in Ghana.<\/p>\n

In her address for the occasion, Dr O\u2019Shaughnessy, at the very outset, thanked the Prime Minister and the personnel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade for their outstanding support during her tenure.<\/p>\n

The High Commissioner stressed that the efforts deployed by the Government of Mauritius to facilitate her entry in the country during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic were testimony to the mutual respect and friendship between the two nations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis reflected the fundamental strength of Mauritius in respect of diplomatic convention and a willingness to make things work to strengthen the partnership\u201d, she stated.<\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s 17th High Commissioner to Mauritius also dwelt on the various collaborative endeavours between the two countries at the level of Government as well as with public, private and civil society organisations in fields such as the ocean economy, climate change, gender equality and education.<\/p>\n

While saluting the leadership of Mauritius as a Small Island Developing State in the global response to climate change, Dr O\u2019Shaughnessy called for joint continuous undertakings for a gender-inclusive community.<\/p>\n

Regarding the education sector, the High Commissioner recalled that there were some 4,000 Mauritians who enrolled annually with Australian universities, thereby enabling the partnership between the two countries to go from strength to strength.
\nShe was of the view that it was the Mauritian students who would contribute to enhance the breadth and depth of the bilateral relations. Dr O\u2019Shaughnessy also seized the opportunity to salute all friends and partners who were engaged with the Australian High Commission during her tenure. She further highlighted the personal and professional relationships that were pivotal to her mission in Mauritius.<\/p>\n
