Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund held, this morning at Cascavelle Multipurpose Hall, an official ceremony, followed by two workshops on permaculture and waste recycling, in the context of the International Nelson Mandela Day 2022, under the global chosen theme \u2018Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.
\nThe Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mr Nand Prakash Ramchurrun; the Member of Parliament, Mrs Marie Sandra Monia Mayotte; the High Commissioner of South Africa to Mauritius, Dr Hlamalani Nelly Manzini; the Chairperson of the District Council of Black River, Mr Ludovic Labeaut\u00e9; the Chairperson of the Board of the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund, Mr Oliver Michael Thomas; and other personalities attended the official ceremony.<\/p>\n

This year, the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund focused its activities on creating awareness on solutions to the impacts of climate change and food insecurity.<\/p>\n

Children and adults, who participated in the workshop on permaculture, learnt the importance of community and backyard gardening and the way to start their own home garden.
\nMedicinal and food plants were moreover distributed to nudge them to take the first steps towards home gardening. Participants were apprised, too, of how wastes could be cleverly assembled into musical instruments.<\/p>\n

In their address for the occasion, Mrs Mayotte and Messrs Labeaut\u00e9 and Thomas dwelt on the necessity to work together as a nation and build an inclusive society, where everyone respects each other. They urged participants to strive for social cohesion and harmony.<\/p>\n

For her part, the South African High Commissioner underlined Mr Mandela\u2019s commitment to democratic values of freedom, justice for all and equality, and his efforts for the liberation and democratisation process in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Stressing the critical aspects of empowerment, Dr Manzini called on participants to devise and engage in activities with a view to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and develop sustainable solutions to food insecurity.
\nIt is recalled that in 2009, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 18 July as International Nelson Mandela Day, coinciding with the former South African President\u2019s birthday.
\nThe purpose is not only to pay tribute to the freedom fighter but also to encourage people to make a difference, like Madiba, and promote positive change through their actions.<\/p>\n
