Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Art is dead Dude\u201d, Jason M Allen told the New York Times. Mr Allen is the winner of the Colorado State Art Fair\u2019s competition in the category of \u201cemerging digital artists\u201d.<\/p>\n

His winning entry \u201cTh\u00e9\u00e2tre D\u2019op\u00e9ra Spatial\u201d was made using Midjourney, an artificial intelligence system that enables images to be created simply by inputting a few text prompts \u2013 for example \u201can astronaut riding a horse\u201d.<\/p>\n

Many artists were furious, but Mr Allen was unmoved: \u201cIt\u2019s over. A. I. won. Humans lost\u201d, he told the paper. Mr Allen earned just $300 (\u00a3262) from the contest, but the news struck a tender nerve.<\/p>\n

Some artists were already fearful that a new breed of AI image generator could take their jobs, and take a free ride on the years spent learning their craft.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis thing wants our jobs, it\u2019s actively anti-artist\u201d, wrote California-based movie and game concept artist RJ Palmer in a Tweet liked more than 25,000 times.<\/p>\n

In Twitter posts he highlighted how well the output of AI systems could imitate living artists. In one case he examined, the AI even attempted to reproduce artists\u2019 signatures.<\/p>\n

What makes this AI different is that it\u2019s explicitly trained on current working artists. You can see below that the AI generated image(left) even tried to recreate the artist\u2019s logo of the artist it ripped off.<\/p>\n

This thing wants our jobs, its actively anti-artist. pic. twitter. com\/4zXDeaIUzw The output of these AI systems is impressive, but they are built upon the output of flesh-and-blood creators \u2013 their AIs are trained on millions of human-made images.<\/p>\n

Stable Diffusion, a recently launched open-source AI image generator, learns from a compressed file of \u201c100,000 gigabytes of images\u201d scraped from the internet, its founder Emad Mostaque tells me.<\/p>\n

Mr Mostaque, a computer scientist with a background in tech and finance, sees the Stable Diffusion as a \u201cgenerative search engine\u201d. Whereas Google image searches show you pictures that already exist, Stable Diffusion shows you anything you can imagine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a Star Trek Holodeck moment\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Art in the blink of an AI<\/b><\/p>\n

Artists have always learned from and been influenced by others \u2013 \u201cgreat artists steal\u201d as the saying goes \u2013 but Mr Palmer says of AI is not just like finding inspiration in the work of other artists: \u201cThis is directly stealing their essence in a way\u201d.<\/p>\n

And AI can reproduce a style in seconds: \u201cRight now, if an artist wants to copy my style, they might spend a week trying to replicate it,\u201d Mr Palmer tells me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s one person spending a week to create one thing. With this machine, you can produce hundreds of them a week\u201d.<\/p>\n

But Mr Mostaque says he\u2019s not worried about putting artists out of work \u2013 the project is a tool like Microsoft\u2019s spreadsheet software Excel, which \u2013 he notes \u2013 \u201cdidn\u2019t put the accountants out of work, I still pay my accountants\u201d.<\/p>\n

So what is his message to young artists worried about their future career, perhaps in illustration or design? \u201cMy message to them would be, \u2018illustration design jobs are very tedious\u2019.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not about being artistic, you are a tool\u201d. He suggests they find opportunities using the new technology: \u201cThis is a sector that\u2019s going to grow massively.<\/p>\n

Make money from this sector if you want to make money, it\u2019ll be far more fun\u201d. And there are already artists using AI art for inspiration and to make money.<\/p>\n

OpenAI say their DALL-E AI system is used by more than 3,000 artists from more than 118 countries. There have even been graphic novels made using AI. The author of one called the tech \u201ca collaborator that can excite and surprise you in the creative process\u201d.<\/p>\n

But although there is a lot of anger about the way AIs use artists\u2019 work, experts say legal challenges may be difficult. Professor Lionel Bently, director of the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law at Cambridge University, says that in the UK \u201cit\u2019s not an infringement of copyright, in general, to use the style of somebody else\u201d.<\/p>\n

Professor Bently tells me an artist would need to show that output of an AI had reproduced a significant part of their original creative expression in a particular piece of their art used to train the AI.<\/p>\n

Even where that\u2019s possible \u2013 not many artists will have the means to fight such legal battles. The Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS), which collects payments on behalf of artists for the use of their images, is worried.<\/p>\n

I asked DACS\u2019 head of policy Reema Selhi if artists\u2019 livelihoods are at stake. \u201cAbsolutely yes,\u201d she says. DACS is not against the use of AI in art, but Ms Selhi wants artists, whose work is used by AI image systems to make money, to be rewarded fairly and have control over how their works are used.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no safeguards for artists. to be able to identify works in databases that are being used and opt out\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

Artists might be able to claim copyright infringement when an image is scraped from the internet in order to be used to train an AI \u2013 although legal experts I spoke to suggested a number of reasons why such a claim might fail.<\/p>\n

And Ms Selhi said proposed changes to UK law would instead make it easier for AI companies to legally scrape artists\u2019 work from the internet \u2013 something which DACS opposes. Mr Mostaque says he understood artists\u2019 fears and frustrations, noting that \u201cyou saw this with photography as well\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said the project was working with \u201ctechnology industry leaders to create mechanisms by which artists can upload their portfolios and request for their styles not to be used in online services using this and similar technology\u201d.<\/p>\n

Deep fakes, porn and bias<\/b><\/p>\n

Google previously created an AI that could create images from text prompts. Called Imagen, it was never opened up for the public to experiment with because of the \u201cpotential risks of misuse\u201d.<\/p>\n

Google warned that the datasets of scraped images used to train AI\u2019s often included pornography, reflected social stereotypes, and contained \u201cderogatory, or otherwise harmful, associations to marginalized identity groups\u201d.<\/p>\n

Recently Techcrunch reported on concerns that Stable Diffusion could be used to create non-consensual pornography, so-called deepfakes and other problematic images.<\/p>\n

Mr Mostaque says that kind of unethical use \u201cbreaks the license terms\u201d. And he says the software already filters out attempts to create not-safe-for-work imagery, although that can be worked around by the technically savvy.<\/p>\n

But the onus, he says, is \u201cupon the person doing something illegal\u201d, and other existing tools can also be abused, for example someone could use \u201cPhotoshop\u2019s merge tool to stick someone\u2019s head on a nude\u201d.<\/p>\n

Art or goo?<\/b><\/p>\n

Sci-fi artist Simon St\u00e5lenhag tweeted that AI art revealed, the \u201ckind of derivative, generated goo . . our new tech lords are hoping to feed us\u201d. And there are some big names connected to the development of the tech.<\/p>\n

The \u201ctechno-king\u201d himself Elon Musk is a backer of OpenAI. Far from being \u201cderivative goo\u201d, they say DALL-E assists human creativity and produces \u201cunique, original images that have never existed before\u201d.<\/p>\n

For a final opinion, I rang up contemporary artist and broadcaster Bob-and-Roberta-Smith (the name belongs to just one artist). He\u2019s had work in the big galleries, and will be staging an artistic takeover of the shop in London\u2019s Tate Modern gallery in October.<\/p>\n

He works in old-school physical media mainly but he thinks AI could be an interesting area of artistic activity, in the tradition of the mash-up. But policy makers, he says, need to get the rules right, \u201cso nobody feels ripped off\u201d, and money isn\u2019t just siphoned off from artists and into the pockets of big corporations.
