Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>At the launching ceremony of a solar photovoltaic (PV) farm at RT Knits Ltd in Pointe aux Sables, on Friday 2 September 2022, the Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah, called on local manufacturing enterprises to invest in renewable energy as part of the objective to establish a carbon neutral industrial sector.
\nAt the outset, the Minister deemed the installation of the solar PV farm as another milestone achieved by RT Knits Ltd, one of the pioneers and leaders in textile and apparel manufacturing enterprises in Mauritius for some 52 years, in its quest to remain competitive while at the same time showing the determination towards a greener environment. \u201cThis will enable the Company to sharpen its competitive edge by making substantial savings on its electricity needs, and differentiate itself as a sustainable manufacturer in its endeavour to capture a higher proportion of the market for eco-label products,\u201d said Mr Bholah.
\nMoreover, the Minister welcomed the plans of RT Knits Ltd to expand its solar PV farm to generate 100% of its electrical energy needs in its drive to become carbon neutral by 2040. He thus commended the initiatives taken by the CEO of the Enterprise, Mr Kendall Tang, and his team, in the fields of new technologies, environment preservation, innovation and creativity to transform RT Knits Ltd into a world class player, capable to perform in the premier league of global textile manufacturers.
\nHighlighting the tendency of customers to shift towards greener products and the new prominence of sustainable manufacturing, Mr Bholah pointed out the commitment of Government towards the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals for a cleaner and greener planet. He thus underscored the host of measures announced by Government in Budgets 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 to accelerate the transition phase to higher renewable energy uptake so that at least 60% of the county\u2019s energy needs would come from green sources by 2030.
\nThe Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives also reiterated that Government was fully engaged to assist the development of the manufacturing sector, including textile and clothing, underlining its long-term sustainability to generate employment,<\/p>\n
