Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>A ceremony to mark Engineers Day 2022 and recognise the contributions of engineers to the economy and society, was held at the Core Building, University of Mauritius (UOM) Campus, Eb\u00e8ne. The theme retained this year is Engineering: The Pathway to Building Resilience to Climate Change in SIDS.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano, the President of the Institution of Engineers Mauritius (IEM), Mr Raj Prayag, and other personalities were present on the occasion.<\/p>\n

On the same occasion, a prize giving ceremony was also organised to reward the best students who have participated in a poster competition on climate change.<\/p>\n

The winners are as follows: First prize winner: Ms Maheera Bibi Dowlut from Sodnac SSS Second prize winner: Ms Sajidah Guffoor from Pailles SSS Third prize winner: Mr Rajnish Ramjeeawon from Ramsoondar Prayag SSS<\/p>\n

In his address, Minister Ramano dwelt on the key role of engineers to ensuring everyone has access to clean water and reliable energy abreast the adverse effects of climate change. Engineers, therefore, he said are important actors in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the contributions of engineers, we have been able to adapt to the impacts of climate change, but we also need to anticipate future impacts, which are increasing every year\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

On this score, he pointed out that both mitigation and adaptation measures require new approaches, based on innovation and new technologies. Engineers, the Minister stated, must therefore adjust their work to meet the country\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

He called upon everyone including engineers to build resilience and promote sustainable development. The Environment Minister reiterated Government\u2019s commitment to sustainable development goals through a series of measures put in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in the process of finalising the plan for the implementation of the targets set out in our Nationally Determined Contributions revised in 2021\u201d, he said while emphasising that the Ministry of Energy and Utilities has already finalised a Renewable Energy Roadmap to 2030 to chart the way forward for the expansion of renewable energy technologies and the diversification of Mauritius’ energy mix.<\/p>\n

As for the President of the IEM, he recalled that Engineers Day aims to recognise the contribution of engineers to nation building in terms of designing, building and maintaining essential services for the country. He also observed that engineers have a more critical role to play in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) owing to their sensitivity and fragility.<\/p>\n
