Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Darsanand Balgobin, urged entrepreneurs to take advantage of the various schemes being provided by the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) and come up with innovative projects to propel the country to new heights of development.
\nThe Minister made this appeal, today, during a site visit at Indika Pharma Ltd, in Ferney, to take stock of progress made by the nutraceutical organisation. The Executive Director of the MRIC, Professor Theesan Bahorun, and the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Indika, Mr Fabien Boulle\u0301, were present.
\nIn his address, Mr Balgobin lauded Indika Pharma Ltd for conducting research and successfully transforming local medicinal plants which are proven sources of nutraceuticals such as moringa, citronella, rosemary and basilica into comestible, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products for both local and international consumers.
\nThe Minister recalled that in November 2017, Axonova Pharma Ltd and the University of Mauritius, benefited from the MRIC\u2019s Biotechnology Research and Innovation Grant scheme to conduct a study on pharmacological screening to assess the neuroprotective and therapeutic potentials of Mauritian medicinal plants.
\nA start-up \u2018Indika Pharma Ltd\u2019 emanated from this project with the main objective to position Mauritius as a nutraceutical hub and create a sustainable economic activity for the country, he indicated.
\nFor his part, Professor Bahorun said that in line with Government\u2019s vision to implement a nutraceutical industry in Mauritius, the present project aims at valorising the regional biodiversity and promoting innovation locally.<\/p>\n
