Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, effected, today, site visits at Petite Julie, Amaury, Amitie\u0301, Piton and Cottage to take stock of progress of works concerning construction of drains and flood mitigation projects in the northern region of the island.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Minister Hurreeram indicated that Government was investing massively in major infrastructural projects around the country in a bid to mitigate flood risks and ensure the safety of inhabitants.<\/p>\n

He underlined that inhabitants of these regions had to face a number of difficulties during the rainy season, adding that the drain projects would contribute in providing a safe and secure environment to the population.<\/p>\n

With regard to construction works at Mon Piton in Rivie\u0300re du Rempart, he pointed out that a velocity dissipator of 14 metres had been constructed to provide sufficient headroom to allow free flow of water during heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe velocity dissipator,\u201d he stated, \u201cwill help transform landlock spaces into buildable land and allow for more development in the area.
\nThe Minister also spoke of other construction and upgrading projects in the pipeline, adding that some of them had already been completed and were benefiting citizens.<\/p>\n

He called upon the inhabitants to display a greater sense of understanding and cooperation as regards the undertaking of works and to be more careful in the areas where constructions were ongoing.<\/p>\n

Minister Hurreeram lauded all stakeholders namely the Land Drainage Authority, the National Development Unit, the Road Development Authority and local authorities that were working together to find solutions to decrease risks in high flood prone areas and ensure the safety of the population. Drain works at Petite Julie Phase 1<\/p>\n

The project comprises the construction of reinforced concrete open\/ covered\/ buried drain 2m to 2.5m wide by 1.5m to 3.25m deep, over a stretch of about 310m, partly within residential area and sugarcane fields to divert flow from existing natural drainage path; construction of reinforced concrete culvert; and relocation of major CWA pipeline.<\/p>\n

Works are in progress and are expected to be completed by end December 2022. Drain works at Cottage The works include the construction of three reinforced concrete bridges to connect access roads across earth drain; construction of five reinforced concrete bridges for movement of irrigation pivot across earth drain; provision of rock barrier along earth drain; and construction of 7m wide track road along about 3 km.<\/p>\n

Works are in progress and the project is about 50% completed. Drain works at Amitie\u0301 Phase 2A The project mainly comprises the construction of a reinforced concrete covered drain 4.75m wide by 2m deep along about 170m with metal grating covers. Works are in progress and the project is expected to be completed by end January 2023. Drain works at Amaury Phase 1<\/p>\n

The works involve the construction of reinforced concrete open drain along about 400m within sugar cane fields at Cite EDC; construction of reinforced concrete covered drain 1 to 1.5m wide by 0.7m to 2m deep over about 325m along public roads within residential area at Cemetery Road and Independence Road; relocation of services (CWA and MT); and upgrading of roads. The project is about 35% completed.<\/p>\n
