Barry Sharpless, from the Scripps Research Institute, won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, for \u201cthe development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal\u201d.<\/p>\n

K. Barry Sharpless thus becomes the fifth person to receive two Nobel Prizes. He had already received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001 and is now following in the footsteps of John Bardeen, Marie Sk\u0142odowska Curie, Linus Pauling and Frederick Sanger.<\/p>\n

Johan Aqvist, chairman of the Nobel Chemistry Committee, said this year\u2019s prize \u201cis about not overcomplicating things, but working with what is easy and simple.<\/p>\n

\u201d \u201cFunctional molecules can be built even following a direct route,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Click chemistry is a class of biocompatible small molecule reactions commonly used in bioconjugation, allowing the coupling of substrates of choice with specific biomolecules.<\/p>\n

Bioorthogonal, a term coined by Bertozzi herself, is a chemical reaction that can occur within living systems without interfering with native biochemical processes.<\/p>\n

Barry Sharpless coined the concept of click chemistry around 2000, \u201cwhich is a simple and reliable form of chemistry where reactions occur quickly and unwanted by-products are avoided,\u201d the Swedish Academy explained in a statement.<\/p>\n

Shortly afterwards, Morten Meldal and Barry Sharpless \u2013 independently \u2013 \u201cpresented what is today the crown jewel of click chemistry: the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition.<\/p>\n

This is an elegant and efficient chemical reaction\u201d that is now used in a generalized way. \u201cAmong many other uses, it is used in the development of pharmaceuticals, for mapping DNA and creating more fit-for-purpose materials.<\/p>\n
