Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Excavation works for the A1 Road Crossing at Grand River North West (GRNW), funded to the tune of Rs 42 million, are being undertaken in four phases starting from 18 November 2022.<\/p>\n

A press tour was organised on-site, this morning, to inform the public about the scope of the works that are expected to last till 23 December 2022. The works are being undertaken as part of Phase 2 of the Pailles Guibies Sewerage Project which is funded to the tune of Rs 979,238,452.98 by the Government of Mauritius.<\/p>\n

The Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Dr (Mrs) Marie Christiane Dorine Chukowry; the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr H. Matar; the Contract Manager, Contractor Sinohydro Corporation Ltd, Mr Sammouga Ratnan; and the representative of the Wastewater Management Authority (WMA) Mrs R.<\/p>\n

Damoree, were present. In a statement, the PPS highlighted the importance of the project and the works and reassured that Police Officers will be present on a 24\/7 basis for the duration of the works.<\/p>\n

She moreover called for the understanding of road users and inhabitants of the region given that the works will certainly cause some inconveniences. Speaking about the Pailles Guibies Sewerage Project, she shared that it started in 2019 and is long-overdue.<\/p>\n

It has however undergone some delay majorly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and the two ensuing lockdowns, she conceded. We are now nevertheless trying to catch up as much as possible, she added.<\/p>\n

For his part, ASP Matar stated that the works are being carried out in a strategic zone given that it connects regions such as Petite Rivie\u0300re and Pointe-aux-Sables to Port-Louis.<\/p>\n

These works will be carried out at night and during week-ends and there will be temporary closures as A1 Road is a bus route linking Beau Bassin, Pointe-aux-Sables and Petite Rivie\u0300re to Port-Louis, he indicated.<\/p>\n

At peak time in the morning, when road users are leaving Beau Bassin\/Petite Rivie\u0300re\/Pointe-aux-Sables towards Port-Louis, two lanes in the direction of Port-Louis will be opened, while in the afternoon at peak time, the same arrangements will be made with two lanes opened from Port-Louis for road users going in the opposite direction, he explained.<\/p>\n

Traffic lights will not be operational during these works but Police Officers will be present on-site and will closely monitor the situation and issue road information, he emphasised.<\/p>\n

ASP Matar, in addition, appealed to pedestrians to be extremely vigilant and to abide by police guidelines. The contractors have also set up a pedestrian crossing, he informed and requested road users to slow down when approaching the work site.<\/p>\n

The Sewerage Project is implemented by the WMA with the objective to establish a sewerage network which will collect and treat domestic wastewater from around 3000 households for disposal to an environmentally acceptable quality.<\/p>\n

Works under the project which comprise mainly the laying of sewers are currently being implemented by the Contractor Sinohydro Corporation Ltd. As for the works across the A1 Road Crossing, these are fundamental for the Sewerage Project to be operational and form part of the main trunk sewer towards the existing GRNW pumping station.<\/p>\n

The scope of works is as follows: Construction of approximately 30 m GRP 600 mm dia pipes at an average depth of approximately 6 m; Construction of one manhole; and, Reinstatement of Road Development Authority road (A1) and other ancillary work.
