But 26-year-old Laqdar Ramoly, who didn’t know the difference between a filly and a colt when he was a youngster, has already climbed racing’s Mount Everest.

Not The $15m Everest – but winning Perth’s champion apprentice jockey title after coming to Australia on a 12-month course in 2019, after never having ridden in a race before was just as good for the young jockey.

On Saturday at Ascot, Ramoly will take his second career Group 1 ride when he is legged aboard $126 Northerly Stakes roughie Notorious One. It would be a massive blowout if he could win – tangling with the likes of the world’s best jockey James McDonald on $2.80 favourite Cascadian.

But Ramoly has beaten huge odds before – just to become a jockey. “My dad is a bricklayer and my mum is a housewife, I grew up not knowing anything about horses or racing,” Ramoly told News Corp.

“I was very short but I was quite fit as I was doing Jujitsu, soccer and swimming.

“Then what happened was that during every school holiday, I would go to my cousin’s place which was just next to the racetrack in Mauritius.

“From then on I was watching the horses, I was passionate about the animal, even though I knew nothing about races.

“I told my dad that I wanted to be a jockey and that’s all I could think about and I was focused 110 per cent on it.

” But even with his single-minded determination, there were plenty of challenges ahead for the young Ramoly.

Mauritius doesn’t have the training programs for prospective young jockeys that Australia does, so it was very much of a case of sink of swim for Ramoly.

“In Mauritius there aren’t the opportunities there are in Australia,” Ramoly said.

“I started in a pony club and learned how to ride ponies, twice a week for a couple of years.

“But you don’t learn much riding twice a week.

“Then I worked as a groom to learn about horses.

“I was riding five or six retired thoroughbreds a day.

“Slowly, slowly, I just built my knowledge up about horses.

“Before coming to Australia I was riding trials and trackwork, but I hadn’t ridden in a race.

“Basically all the trainers in Mauritius bring foreign jockeys in to ride for them.

” Ramoly arrived in Australia in 2019 on a wing and a prayer but quickly showed Perth trainers he had plenty of skill in the saddle. Then the Covid pandemic hit.

While it was a nightmare for everyone, it had the silver lining for Ramoly of keeping him in Australia to continue learning and improving his riding craft.

“I was only meant to come here for one year on a visa but my time has just got extended by Covid,” he says.

“This is the first time I have been away from my parents and I did want to go back and see them for a few weeks during Covid, but if I went home during that period I wouldn’t have been able to come back to Australia.

“With the way racing is going in Mauritius, I would prefer to stay here as it’s a great place to learn from all the good jockeys.

“When I first came to Australia I certainly didn’t even think about winning the apprentice title, I just wanted to learn the maximum I could in one year.

“When I lost my (apprentice) claim, I thought I might not get many rides but all the trainers are still supporting me and I am very grateful for this.
Ramoly had his first Group 1 ride recently when partnering Chris and Michael Gangemi-trained Notorious One in the Railway Stakes, finishing 14th and beaten almost seven lengths.

It’s hard to see Notorious One being there when the whips are cracking at the finish of the Northerly Stakes, but Ramoly has a refreshing attitude about the task that confronts him.
“I go into the race with nothing to lose,” Ramoly said.
“This horse has got ability, but he’s not an easy horse to ride.
“I just want to go out there safe and come back safe.”

For More News And Analysis About Mauritius Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Mauritius.
