Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Cleaners at Twitter\u2019s headquarters in San Francisco have told they were sacked without severance pay. One of them told a member of Elon Musk\u2019s team had said their jobs would be replaced by robots.<\/p>\n

A California state senator said Mr Musk was treating the former staff \u201clike garbage\u201d. San Francisco\u2019s city attorney, David Chiu, said he\u2019s investigating if Mr Musk broke the law.<\/p>\n

Twitter has not responded to a BBC request for comment. \u201cElon Musk has had a long history of flouting labour laws,\u201d Mr Chiu told. \u201cWhile I\u2019m not surprised this happened, I feel for these workers.<\/p>\n

We will be looking into this further. \u201d The press spoke to four cleaners who say they were fired from Twitter on Monday \u2013 their interviews were conducted in Spanish.<\/p>\n

Adrianna Villarreal, who worked for Twitter for four years, said she\u2019s now worried she won\u2019t have enough money to feed her family over Christmas. \u201cIt\u2019s a sad and frustrating thing for our families and children,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The cleaners were working at Twitter last week until they were told their jobs were under threat. Olga Miranda, president of the cleaners\u2019 union, said they organised a strike on Monday to protest.<\/p>\n

The cleaners were then told they had been laid off effective immediately, she says. \u201cThey did this three weeks before Christmas,\u201d she said. \u201cI think we were fired because we\u2019re a union.<\/p>\n

\u201d Julio Alvarado had been a cleaner for 10 years at Twitter. He says the environment was always friendly during his time there.<\/p>\n

But he says things changed when Elon Musk took over Twitter in October. \u201cPeople worked without worries,\u201d he told the BBC. \u201cNow we are afraid. \u201d Since Mr Musk acquired the company, Mr Alvarado says he was escorted by private security while cleaning parts of the office.<\/p>\n

He also says he was told by someone from Mr Musk\u2019s team that his job would be obsolete soon anyway because robots would eventually replace human cleaners.<\/p>\n

Without his job, Mr Alvarado says he\u2019s worried about paying his bills. He also says he\u2019s supporting his family back in Mexico. \u201cI can only tell you, I don\u2019t have money to pay the rent,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to have medical insurance. I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to do. \u201d<\/p>\n

Juana Laura Chavero Ramirez said she had worked for five years at Twitter. A diabetic, she\u2019s concerned she won\u2019t be able to get her medication. \u201cIt\u2019s just horrible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not only losing our job, we\u2019re losing our income.<\/p>\n

\u201d Adrianna Villarreal, who had worked at Twitter since 2018, said she was worried she would not be able to afford Christmas gifts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are supposed to have Christmas presents for our children,\u201d she said, \u201ca plate of food on our table and overnight we don\u2019t have anything.<\/p>\n

\u201d The cleaners say they do not know what to do \u2013 as there are few available cleaning vacancies in San Francisco at the moment.<\/p>\n

A small group of cleaners have protested outside San Francisco\u2019s Twitter headquarters since Monday. California state senator Scott Wiener told the BBC the cleaners had been treated \u201chorribly\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the short term, I\u2019d like to see him [Elon Musk] treat his janitors like human beings,\u201d said Mr Wiener, \u201cand get them back working \u2013 not just throw them out right before Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n
