{"id":23799,"date":"2022-12-18T08:50:47","date_gmt":"2022-12-18T08:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\/all-news\/modric-hit-hard-by-world-cup-defeat-his-croatia-future-unclear"},"modified":"2022-12-18T09:23:25","modified_gmt":"2022-12-18T09:23:25","slug":"modric-hit-hard-by-world-cup-defeat-his-croatia-future-unclear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\/all-news\/modric-hit-hard-by-world-cup-defeat-his-croatia-future-unclear","title":{"rendered":"Modric \u2018hit hard\u2019 by World Cup defeat, his Croatia future unclear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Croatia\u2019s veteran playmaker Luka Modric was \u201chit really hard\u201d by his team\u2019s defeat to Argentina in Tuesday\u2019s World Cup semifinal, according to the team\u2019s manager Zlatko Dalic.<\/p>\n<p>The 37-year-old Modric made his 161st appearance for his country in the final four match where an inspired Argentina beat Croatia 3-0 to book a spot in Sunday\u2019s final.<\/p>\n<p>That loss leaves Croatia with a third-place playoff against Morocco on Saturday, and it is unclear whether Modric will play any more for the national team after the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The 10-time Croatian footballer of the year won the Ballon D\u2019or and the FIFA Golden Ball in 2018 as he captained his national team to the World Cup final \u2013 which they lost 4-2 to France.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Modric was taken off late in the second half to a standing ovation from both Croatian and Argentinian fans. The optics raised questions about whether it was a final goodbye, with the Real Madrid midfielder hugging each of his teammates as he traipsed off the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>Dalic has suggested that he would like the current Croatian side, with Modric at the helm, to remain together until the 2024 European Championships. \u201cWe have had a great team, and this generation will finish off their career at Euro 2024\u201d, Dalic said at a press conference on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have the Nations League and an excellent generation who reached two semifinals\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Modric has also enjoyed considerable success at club level, winning La Liga three times and picking up five Champions League trophies during his 11 at Real Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>Dalic said that Modric would make the decision on international retirement \u201con his own\u201d but added that \u201csurely the whole world would miss him if he retires from the national team, and I hope he won\u2019t decide to do that\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuka Modric showed he is not only a great player, he\u2019s a great professional, a great sportsman,\u201d Dalic said.
