Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>A wreath-laying ceremony was held, yesterday, at the \u2018Monument aux Esclaves\u2019 in Pointe Canon, Mahebourg to commemorate the 188th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery, observed on 1st February annually.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Monument aux Esclaves\u2019 was erected in 1985 on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery to honour the memory of those individuals who were freed on 1st February 1835.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Georges Pierre Lesjongard; the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint; the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram; the Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck; and other personalities were present.<\/p>\n

Every year, the abolition of slavery is observed to pay tribute to human beings who were enslaved in the 18th and 19th centuries in colonial Mauritius.<\/p>\n

Several wreath-laying ceremonies, including one at \u2018Bassin des Esclaves\u2019 in Pamplemousses on 30th January 2023, have been organised by the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage with the view to highlight the hardships, trials and tribulations of slaves in the country as well their contribution to the development of Mauritius.<\/p>\n

A wreath-laying ceremony is being held, today, at the International Slave Route Monument in Le Morne to commemorate the 188th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery, in the presence of the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, amongst others.<\/p>\n
