Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Bill was voted on Tuesday evening, with amendments. During his summing-up, the Minister of the Environment, Kavy Ramano, stressed that this bill is important for the population to have a clean, green and less polluting environment.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, it can be considered as a stepping stone towards the establishment of a circular economy in the solid waste sector in Mauritius. \u201cIt will foster and strengthen the recycling industry in Mauritius which is still in its infancy.<\/p>\n

Greater capacity to recycle, reuse or refurbish waste will provide a stronger foundation for the expanding recycling and resource management industry. As a result, the creation of green jobs for recycling, sorting and collecting materials will increase. \u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, Minister Ramano stressed that with the new law, local authorities will be called upon to play a crucial role in circularity and the integrated approach to waste.<\/p>\n

An in-depth awareness campaign will be conducted to sensitize the population to sorting waste at source. But anyone who breaks the law on a first conviction would be liable to a fine not exceeding Rs 100,000 and imprisonment not exceeding two years. In case of recidivism, he would be liable to a maximum fine of Rs 200,000 and a prison term not exceeding eight years.<\/p>\n

In this same context, the Minister of Energy and Utilities, Joe Lesjongard, welcomed and fully supported the bill and stated that the objective is to divert, by 2030, approximately 70% of the waste generated by landfills via an ecological transition.<\/p>\n
