Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), Dr Marcin Czepelak, was received by the Attorney General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, this afternoon, in his office in Port-Louis. The Secretary-General is currently on official visit to Mauritius for a week.<\/p>\n

In a statement after the meeting, Minister Gobin stated that Government aims to make of Mauritius an arbitration hub while highlighting that the visit of the Secretary-General will be an advantage to help the country in realising the Mauritius Arbitration Project.<\/p>\n

\u2019\u2019When arbitrations take place in a country, it brings alongside service providers and eventually revenue to the country\u2019\u2019, he added.<\/p>\n

The Attorney General, consequently, underlined the importance for Mauritius to position itself as an arbitration hub to achieve higher growth rates and attain its next level of development. As for the Secretary-General, he indicated that he is on his first visit to Mauritius after his nomination last year.<\/p>\n

The aim is to get familiar with the functioning of the judiciary system of Mauritius and to support the country in enhancing its current system while contributing in promoting international peace and justice.<\/p>\n

Dr Czepelak also mentioned that Mauritius is among the first international countries to have housed the Office of the PCA. The PCA is an international court and international organisation currently with 122 Contracting Parties including 24 African States and Mauritius is a party since 03 August 1970.<\/p>\n

The PCA Mauritius Office counts three Legal Counsel \u2013 one of whom acts as the PCA Representative in Mauritius, an Assistant Legal Counsel, and a Case Manager.<\/p>\n

The PCA Mauritius Office also benefits from the support of three Government officials, who provide assistance with the daily management of the Office.<\/p>\n

The PCA regularly provides administrative services in support of parties and arbitrators conducting arbitral proceedings under the PCA\u2019s auspices, serving as the official channel of communications and ensuring safe custody of documents.<\/p>\n

The PCA also provide services such as financial administration, logistical and technical support for meetings and hearings, travel arrangements, and general secretarial and linguistic support.<\/p>\n

In addition, a staff member of the International Bureau may be appointed as registrar or administrative secretary for a case and carry out administrative tasks at the direction of the arbitral tribunal.<\/p>\n
