Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Unlike a previous message calling for a pause on AI development, the latest open letter to note how much damage the field could cause has been signed by some of the industry\u2019s biggest players.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of artificial intelligence researchers and technology executives have signed off on a stark warning that AI poses an existential threat to humanity, in the latest sign of widespread alarm within the industry over the potential threat posed by the new field.<\/p>\n

\u201cMitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,\u201d reads a Tuesday statement released by the nonprofit Center for AI Safety.<\/p>\n

The release carried the signatures of some of the industry\u2019s top names, including ChatGPT creator and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and nearly 40 members of Google\u2019s DeepMind artificial intelligence unit.<\/p>\n

Dan Hendrycks, the computer scientist leading the Center for AI Safety, said the letter\u2019s brevity was intentional. It\u2019s not the first institutional effort to draw attention to the problem.<\/p>\n

Another public letter published in March attracted the signatures of over 1,000 academics, businessmen, and technology specialists urging a pause in AI development until it can be regulated and run responsibly.<\/p>\n

As US media reported, \u201cmost of the field\u2019s most influential leaders didn\u2019t sign\u201d that letter, \u201cbut they have signed the new statement, including Altman and two of Google\u2019s most senior AI executives: Demis Hassabis and James Manyika.<\/p>\n

While the signatures of Microsoft Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott and Microsoft Chief Scientific Officer Eric Horvitz both appear on the statement, \u201cnotably absent from the letter is Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the field\u2019s two most powerful corporate leaders,\u201d one outlet explained.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Altman testified before Congress that AI could \u201ccause significant harm to the world\u201d either by spreading disinformation or by manipulating humans\u2019 emotions, and its potential to wreak havoc in people\u2019s lives is quickly becoming clear. A number of companies have already expressed a desire to replace human workers with the technology.<\/p>\n
