Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Marie Cyril Eddy Boissezon, officially launched, today at Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Tower in Ebe\u0300ne, a \u2018Networking Forum for Data Protection Officers in Mauritius\u2019, organised by the National Committee on Corporate Governance (NCCG), in collaboration with the Data Protection Office (DPO).<\/p>\n

The Chairperson of the NCCG, Ms Aruna Radhakeessoon, the Data Protection Commissioner, Mrs Drudeisha Madhub, and other personalities, were also present.<\/p>\n

In his address, Vice-President Boissezon highlighted that data is a valued and significant asset for an individual and a country to, for instance, conduct business.<\/p>\n

He underscored that with the internet, cybercrimes have become more frequent and, thus, create a challenge for authorities to safeguard personal data.<\/p>\n

As such, he indicated that the Forum aims to act as a hub for networking, learning, and keeping up-to-date with the latest development in the field of data protection.<\/p>\n

Getting assurance that our data is safeguarded and protected both before and when moving on the network is fundamental in order to prevent new technologies from becoming a threat, he remarked.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Vice-President Boissezon encouraged participants to use the Forum to share experience, challenges, and insights on the implementation of regulations and best practices within their respective organisations as data protection is a shared responsibility and collaboration among Data Protection Officers.<\/p>\n

He also stressed the need to raise awareness on data protection through campaigns targeting youngsters, educational projects, conferences, and open doors at data protection agencies.<\/p>\n

As for Ms Radhakeessoon, she underlined that personal data is now a commodity which imperatively needs to be protected. She observed that the role of Data Protection Officers is bound to evolve and become more complex as technology changes at a rapid pace.<\/p>\n

The Forum is being set up under the patronage of the NCCG and will be open to all Data Protection Officers from all sectors in Mauritius so that they can collaborate in the organisation of workshops and seminars, as well as share best practices and experiences, she added.<\/p>\n

For her part, Mrs Madhub stated that data compliance and protection is a global issue and is a serious responsibility for each and everyone. She emphasised that one of the main objectives of the Forum is to make data protection compliance a reality, and affirmed that Mauritius has expanded its data protection landscape quite impressively in the African region over the years.<\/p>\n

Moreover, she also dwelt on some of the main achievements of the DPO to date, such as the e-DPO which is available 24\/7 and provides a number of online services to citizens.<\/p>\n
