Africa-Press<\/a> – Mauritius<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Equality between men and women. This theme was at the center of the discussions yesterday at the Voil\u00e0 Bagatelle hotel during the launch of the 50:50 campaign by Gender Links. The campaign and the discussion are about there being more men in Parliament.<\/p>\n

Several personalities were present, including Subhasnee Luchmun Roy, Sandra Mayotte and Tania Diolle from the Mouvement socialiste militant (MSM), Dev Sunnasy, the leader of 100% Citoyens and the South African High Commissioner to Mauritius, Nelly Manzini.<\/p>\n

Anushka Virahsawmy, Director of Gender Links Mauritius and Founder of Safe Haven Halfway Home, explained that her team conducted a survey of political parties to find out how many female members they have and to find out the number of women who applied during recent general elections.<\/p>\n

Several political parties, including the MSM, the Mouvement militant mauricien (MMM), the Labor Party, the Mauritius Social Democratic Party (PMSD), Lalit and the Muvman Patriot Morisien, have played the game.<\/p>\n

The speech by Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, lawyer and President of the Public Bodies Appeal Tribunal, did not leave the participants indifferent. She looked back on her political journey and recalled that she was among the first women in the political arena, while recounting the difficulties she faced as a Muslim.<\/p>\n

The 50\u221550 campaign also contains proposals to change the political situation: that political parties adopt a system of Gender Policy and Gender Action Plan, that Mauritius sign the SADC protocol on Gender Development and that the media include the code of communication so that gender parity is an obligation.<\/p>\n
