Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The winners of the Energy Efficiency Competition 2023 were rewarded with cash prizes, certificates and medals during a prize giving ceremony, today, at the Caudan Arts Centre in Port-Louis.<\/p>\n

The winners for the energy efficiency painting, mural and slam poetry competitions are Vivaan Auckel from Sunfield City School; students of Rivie\u0300re des Anguilles State College; and Ras Christ Dj Blackwell Louis, respectively.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Georges Pierre Lesjongard; the Chairperson of the Energy Efficiency Committee, Mr Danen Beemadoo; the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Renuka Bissessur; and other personalities were present at the event.<\/p>\n

In his address, Minister Lesjongard stated that energy efficiency was a key priority of the country\u2019s national strategic plans, adding that Mauritius, as a Small Island Developing State, was cognizant of the challenges posed by climate change and the necessity for the country to reduce its gas emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Energy Efficiency Management Office,\u201d he said, \u201chas been organising competitions since 2014 as a means of raising awareness and contributing to the development of a culture of energy conservation and energy efficiency among the youth in Mauritius.<\/p>\n

\u201d He expressed his satisfaction as regard the interest and high participation of the youth in the competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe competition,\u201d he said, \u201cis instrumental in educating the youth on energy efficiency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe youth,\u201d he stressed, \u201care the torch bearers and future of the country, hence the need to educate them rightly to better contribute to energy efficiency and the progress of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201d The Minister also underlined the positive impact of energy efficiency on a country\u2019s sectors while contributing to fight poverty and enhance the quality of life of the population. For his part, Mr Beemadoo lauded the vision of the youth in bringing their contribution through their artistic talents to the energy sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe competition,\u201d he underscored, \u201cprovided the youth an opportunity to showcase their understanding of energy efficiency and energy saving, investigate related issues and propose solutions, as well as encourage them to work for a more sustainable country through the adoption of an energy conservation culture.<\/p>\n

The Chairperson of the Energy Efficiency Committee recalled the commitment of Government to reduce the country\u2019s dependence on fossil fuels and decrease its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. He urged the youth to act as ambassadors in promoting energy efficiency at home and around them.<\/p>\n
