Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Technology experts weighed in on artificial intelligence\u2019s growing reputation as a \u201cthreat\u201d at the recent Bloomberg Technology Summit in San Francisco have underscored the need to maintain a close watch on the technology as it continues to make huge strides.<\/p>\n

While there are areas in which artificial intelligence (AI) may be beneficial, there are also many things linked to it that could potentially \u201cgo wrong,\u201d Sam Altman, chief executive officer of OpenAI Inc.<\/p>\n

, has acknowledged.<\/p>\n

According to the American entrepreneur and programmer, whose OpenAI has been valued at more than $27 billion, the \u201cbenefits outweigh the costs\u201d of the new technology.<\/p>\n

Altman singled out such areas as science, education, and medicine as offering a promising implementation field for AI advances, adding: Altman also weighed in on ongoing calls by lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence, saying:<\/p>\n

Sam Altman touted the huge success of OpenAI\u2019s products, such as chatbot ChatGPT and image generator Dall-E, and insisted that his concerns about AI at this stage were \u201cnot about money.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have enough money.<\/p>\n

This concept of having enough money is not something that is easy to get across to other people,\u201d Altman said, underscoring that building so-called guardrails for the use of AI is one of the \u201cmost important\u201d steps that \u201chumanity has to get through with technology.<\/p>\n

\u201d Altman also weighed in on Tesla CEO Elon Musk\u2019s recent warnings of AI\u2019s potential to do harm.<\/p>\n

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI with Altman, \u201creally cares about AI safety a lot,\u201d underscored the tech guru, adding that the alarm bells he had been sounding were \u201ccoming from a good place.
\nPreviously, hundreds of artificial intelligence researchers and technology executives signed off on a stark warning that AI poses an existential threat to humanity.<\/p>\n

\u201cMitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,\u201d said the statement published on May 30.<\/p>\n

The release carried the signatures of some of the industry\u2019s top names, including Altman, the \u201cgodfather of AI\u201d Geoffrey Hinton, Director of the Center for AI Safety Dan Hendrycks, and top executives from Microsoft and Google.<\/p>\n

Another public letter published in March drew the signatures of over 1,000 academics, businessmen, and technology specialists urging a pause in AI development until it can be regulated and run responsibly.<\/p>\n
