Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrading of B28 road (phase 2) over a length of 3.1 kilometres from Beau Champ to Bel Air, was held, today, in presence of the Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Speaker, Mr Mohammud Zahid Nazurally, the Chief Executive Officer of the Alteo Ltd, Mr Fabien de Marasse\u0301 Enouf, as well as other personalities were present on the occasion.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Minister Bholah highlighted that this initiative forms part of the numerous development projects budgeted by Government to improve the quality of the country\u2019s road network. The absence of footpath, drain infrastructure, and street lighting in region poses safety issues to road users and pedestrian, he remarked.<\/p>\n

Estimated to the tune of Rs 156 million, the B28 road project will cater for the safety of pedestrians, improve drainage network, decrease travel time, and save in road as well as vehicles maintenance costs amongst others, Mr. Bholah pointed out. He added that the project has been designed by taking into account environment preservation and conservation.<\/p>\n

The Minister also underlined several new and ongoing projects in the region adding that Government is undertaking major infrastructural development projects across the island to respond to the needs of the citizens while enhancing their quality of life.<\/p>\n

As for Mr Nuzurally, he made an appeal to the inhabitants of the region to be patient and collaborate with the authorities until the completion of the project. He also expressed his gratitude to Alteo Ltd for its support in the project.<\/p>\n

The scope of work comprises the construction of four bus laybys; a cycle track of clear width of 2.6m over length of 715m; an asphaltic concrete footpath of width 1.5m over a stretch of 600m; a concrete footpath of width 1.5m over length of 700 mts, 3km of drainage system; realignment of road over length of 425m; provision of handrails and street lighting; and resurfacing of upgraded road.<\/p>\n

The project is expected to be completed by June 2024 It is recalled that the Flacq-Mahebourg road (B28) is the only link connecting the eastern part of the island, Bel Air, to the southern part, Mahebourg.<\/p>\n

The B28 road has over the years experienced physical deterioration, and is flooded at several locations during heavy rain. The road is also used as a haulage route for cane conveyance during the crop season. Consequently, its poor geometry and potential safety hazards require upgrading works.<\/p>\n
