Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Mauritius will be a key player and will assume an even more important role in linking India and Africa, accelerating trade and investment, and fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems for greater opportunities of mutual interest,\u201d stated the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, this morning, at Le Meriden Hotel in Pointe aux Piments.<\/p>\n

He was speaking at the official launch of the third India – Africa Entrepreneurship & Investment Summit. The event, an initiative of the Economic Development Board (EDB) and the India Africa Entrepreneurship Forum, is being held in Mauritius from 20 to 21 July 2023. The High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mrs. K.<\/p>\n

Nandini Singla; the Chief Executive Officer of the EDB, Mr Ken Poonoosamy; the President of the African Business Angel Network, Mr Tomi Davies; the Chairman of the India – Africa Summit, Mr Yaduvendra Mathur; as well as some 150 delegates, including venture capitalists, angel investors and prominent entrepreneurs from India and Africa, were present.<\/p>\n

In his keynote address, President Roopun underlined that Mauritius was strategically positioned to connect India and Africa in terms of its geographic position and its profound historical, cultural and political attachments to both India and Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cMauritius as a Small Island Developing States,\u201d he said, \u201chas remained resolutely on the track of progress and economic growth through a diversification strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201d \u201cThe country has evolved from a \u2018three-pillar economy\u2019 based on sugar, tourism, and textiles, into a modern and robust economy over the years,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMauritius has an active role in enhancing and fostering diplomatic and economic cooperation with both India and Africa,\u201d he said, while adding that the country was also remarkable for its Ease of Doing Business, good governance and stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cMauritius will act as a strategic bridge connecting India and Africa and pave the way forward for greater investment and trade ventures,\u201d stated the President.<\/p>\n

He expressed the wish for Mauritian businesses to serve as trusted partners for Indian enterprises, helping them to navigate the African business landscape and establish a strong foothold on the Continent.<\/p>\n

As for the Indian High Commissioner, she highlighted that India and Africa had a shared history of colonialism, and a rich cultural and linguistic diversity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe deeply believe that Africa holds the key to global rebalancing,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia has always championed the rights of Africa and its inclusion into many international organisations such as the G20 Summit,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia,\u201d she emphasised, \u201cis today the world\u2019s fifth largest economy and is keen on further enhancing development partnership with Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201d She mentioned that India was among the top five investors on the African continent.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally, India provides duty free access to more than 98% of its tariff lines to 33 African countries,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Mrs Singla underscored that some of the priority areas for greater collaboration included renewable and green energies, digital technologies, and pharmaceutical industry.<\/p>\n

She was confident that the Summit would harness the capacity of entrepreneurs in both regions to work together to solve common issues and accelerate trade and investment.<\/p>\n

For his part, Mr Poonoosamy underlined that the Summit was being held with a shared vision of creating a robust connection to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between Mauritius and India, and leverage on each other\u2019s potentials.<\/p>\n

He commended India\u2019s unwavering support to several flagship projects in Mauritius, adding that the existing bilateral ties between the two countries had been further strengthened with the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement in 2021.<\/p>\n

As for Africa, he observed that the African Continental Free Trade Area provided ample opportunities for Mauritius and other Indian firms. \u201cMauritius,\u201d he remarked, \u201chas emerged as a reliable and trusted platform for trade and investment.<\/p>\n

\u201d \u201cIt has also played a pivotal role in facilitating growth and development in India, and has been a significant facilitator for investment structuring across the African continent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EDB,\u201d he stressed, \u201cis committed to accompany both Parties in establishing their relations and to take this cooperation to new heights of success.\u201d<\/p>\n
